Janice Maynard came to the writing life early! When her third grade short story, “The Princess and the Robbers”, won a red ribbon in a school arts fair, Janice was hooked. She followed up that early success with a more commercial piece in the sixth grade… “Why My Mom Loves To Drink Coke”. No advance for that one, but she won a six-pack of Coke… remember those great little bottles?

In junior high Janice began circulating her work to a wider audience. A dozen or so notebook pages stapled together made the rounds in some particularly boring classes, with the riveting tales carefully hidden behind textbooks.

High school meant the big time… editor of the school newspaper, the Maroon and White. Janice used her insightful editorials to delve into such meaty subjects as “locker room odor” and “why we need two-ply tissue in the student bathrooms”.

College brought lots of writing, but very little of it creative… four years later, Janice stepped into the adult world as a fully certified elementary teacher.

Despite motherhood, full-time employment, and keeping up with an “always into something” husband, Janice never lost her love of writing or the desire to be published. In 1996 she realized her long-time dream when Kensington Publishing bought her first book, Sweetheart. That exciting moment was followed by the sales of two more books in the Precious Gem line.

In the fall of 2002, Janice left the classroom to pursue writing full-time.

4 1/2 STARS!

A captivating tale of friendship leading to love! The characters are easy to like and a joy to read. There is an underlying friendship that they have shared over the years, that even though it had waned in recent time still leaves them with a solid foundation of knowing each other well when they set out to reconnect. The secrets surrounding them lead to a fun little cat and mouse game of temptation and passion as their relationship develops to the point of no return!

Jane Norman has been secretly in love with asst chief of police Ethan Oldham for more years than she can even remember. They grew up together and bound along in a great friendship for years before time and circumstance had them drifting apart. As a new year approaches, she can't help but think of him and wish things were different ... so she comes up with a plan to try once and for all to woo him into seeing her as a lover instead of as a friend. She plans to send him an anonymous erotic poem each week until Valentine's Day!

When Ethan hears the address of Jane's pen and stationary store on his police scanner as the site of a vandal, he panics. He knows Jane lives upstairs! When he rushes to her side to make sure she's safe, they can't deny their joy at being in each other's company again ... and Ethan is seeing her in a way he never did before. Have his eyes finally been opened to the fact that she's a desirable woman? She certainly hopes so!

Note by Note is the first book in a new series called Southern Hearts by Janice Maynard. As a friends to lover romance it follows the predictable story line of each friend having feelings for the other yet terrified of the other not returning those feelings and making things awkward. Jane and Ethan's story is very heartfelt and enjoyable. I'm looking forward to more books in this wonderful Southern Hearts series.

Jane decides to show some initiative and let him know how she feels little by little. The thing is she isn't exactly letting him know it is hers. It's pretty much a Valentine's Day surprise until unfortunate events force Jane and Ethan to spend more time together.

Ethan is the sheriff so when someone decides to target Jane's business he has to investigate it. He has a full plate seeing how Jane is special to him and has been for years. Then you have these steamy mysterious letters showing up for him and they are intriguing but could they possibly be dangerous?

I couldn't put this one day and can't wait to read more from Janice Maynard.

“Note by Note” by Janice Maynard is labeled as a romantic novel and Southern Hearts book 1.

Jane Norman has been interested in Ethan Oldham for years. They were friends once and she misses their friendship so she concocts an idea to write seductive poems – it is close to Valentine’s Day – to let him know.
Ethan misses his friendship with Jane too. When her stationery store is vandalized, he’s back in her life and finds himself noticing things about her he hadn’t before. Then he starts receiving sexy handwritten notes. He’s intrigued, but also wonders if this secret admirer could also be dangerous. He is a cop after all.

“Note by Note” is steamy, sizzling, and sexy.
For long-time fans of Janice Maynard you may recognize this storyline. With “Note by Note” being a subtly refreshed version, this friends-to-lovers story stands the test of time just like handwritten – albeit sexy – notes do!

I absolutely adored this story, it was funny and hot as well. I loved the way Jane took charge and later on was too much a coward to do something about her longing for Ethan. It was an uplifting read, positive and more, there were two lovestories in one book.

This book was just okay for me. I, unfortunately, wasn't able to get into this story as much as other stories by this offer. I guess if you like the friends to lovers stories then you would love this book. I just don't think this book was really for me as I tend to find friends to lovers stories too predictable. All in all this book was okay though.
