Sudden Strangers: The Story of a Gay Son and His Father (Stonewall Inn Editions

Rate this book
"This is a story about Walter Fricke and Aaron Fricke, father and son, heterosexual and gay (respectively on all counts). . . .

"It has taken six years to complete this book. During that time, there were periods when it was worked on steadily and times when the material was abandoned as hopeless. The book changed as our father/son relationship changed, and each transformation of the book reflected the transformations in our relationship. It is neither the same book nor the same relationship that we started with six years ago. This was a book that had to be lived, not simply written.

"The final product is the story of an evolving father/son relationship, a story of two people with different ways of looking at the world, and of the hurdles we needed to overcome to respect each other."

A very disjointed narrative. Because the father died while the book was in final edits, I kind of see why, but even the beginning of the book is barely coherent. Lots of pretty pivotal plot details are just tossed aside and there are some pretty gaping holes in the book. I guess in 1991, this was considered a super tolerant book, but the dad’s sections talk a lot about how upset he is that his son his gay, how he wishes he could change it. Sure, it’s anti-conversion therapy so that's nice. I absolutely wouldn’t recommend it to any gay kid, it would just confirm some fears.

Anyone dealing with homosexuality, whether it be themselves or their loved ones especially parents should read this book. It was pinion 1990 but the messages and a even olds true today. You hear the dads perspective of having a gay son and also the sons thoughts on how his dad feels about him. A great read for anyone dealing with this situation.
