Thanks to Chapter-by-Chapter and Rebelight Publishing Inc. for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars rounded up for Rielle's internal journey...

"I surrender my days, my efforts, myself to the OneEarth Bank . . ." So recites the kids enslaved for the crime of rebellion against the contract system. Rielle puts herself into the situation again after she learns Nathan, the boy she abandoned has been sold to a logging camp where contracts go to die in droves. Again she sticks her nose in where it isn't wanted an reveals a major secret about the pandemic sweeping the globe... will she be able to get out a second time?

Rielle James was a namby pamby special snowflake in the first book especially internally where all she did was whine and bemoan her situation. In the end she had to be rescued by two men vying for her special self. I actually enjoyed the first book in that the story setup was brilliant and I loved the twists and turns all the way to the end. This time it's a total reversal! I totally got Rielle and her situation, I loved her struggle to stay true to the boy she picked even as she came into herself as a rebel and a girl in love.

The setup was not up to par of the first book nor was the plot which felt all over the place. What gave it form and function was Rielle. She stood up to her rescuer and boyfriend of a few weeks to run after a "friend." She doesn't even blink when she receives a mysterious message with a whole lot of expectation. When things get really bad she doesn't give up on Nathan nor expect him to rescue her! I just can't rave enough about her this time. I think a lot of it had to do with the plot not forcing the character to act a certain way. In the first book she pretty much had to follow the plan laid out for her. It fit really well because she had just become a slave and to even contemplate rebelling was hard. This time around she was making the choices and taking the risks. And it wasn't too much of a stretch because she knew she had Justin and Uncle Rex supporting her.

The plot is not bad but it lacks the beauty of the first book. It was a little too easy to get the things accomplished and the problems that did crop up were a little on top of one another and convenient. The author needed a little more time to think things through and make the sequence of events work better. I liked the different view of the rebellion with Terrance but it was formless and an after thought. If a little more development had happened with it there could have been a tight little story here. Nathan was another strong component that held the plot together. He does not react as Rielle expects and that worked really well. He stood out as his own man but he also had to give a little and be strong in another more humble way that caused you to love him more.

The book did get really good after 70% and the ending was really spot on. It would have made the perfect cap on a perfect story if the plot had been tighter and more thought out. Nathan went for it and more power to him! Women need to realize that love triangles mean they are using one or the other of the men. Poor, poor Justin. I like that Rielle made a choice and took a stand. I also love that Justin did what he had to do. She may not understand now or ever but you do hard things for those you love. The end showed these characters as real people and that made the entire book worthwhile!

BOTTOM LINE: The dystopian bank intrigue continues with our contract lovebirds...

Subversion is the second of a three book series. I sure hope the third one's coming out soon. I want re-read the first and stay in this world of 'One Bright Future' controlled by OneEarth Bank. The plot is fast and the characters intense. The writing is spectacular. Actions leap off the page and emotions pull us deep into the main character's point of view. And I'm not even a fan of dystopian books. While this book might be set in a terrifying not-that-distant future, the characters are concerned with timeless themes of love, fear and honour.

Rielle James, the protagonist, is on a mission to save a friend. Her courage and naivety combine and made me cheer and shudder for her over and over. The plot kept me turning pages way past my bedtime. Book Three, please!

What a crazy ride this was. I mean after getting free from being enslaved. Rielle James goes back into under a false name. And if that doesn't get you saying oh no, but I get it. But why?? She goes under cover to save Nathan whom gets sold. Now the whole time I was thinking don't get caught, please be able to help him.
But when she starts to uncover more startling things about the government. And just how far one is willing to go to hide everything from the public and how many that are involved. She wonders can her and Nathan take them down once and for all? Will others stand up and help?? I love this book and looking forward to another in this series.
