Part of the ABDO Kids Geology Rocks! series, Soils provides very basic information about soil. Geared towards the K-2 grade range, the book features simple sentences (1 or 2 per page) and bright photographs that take up the remainder of the two-page spread. The facts are easy to digest and the pictures are very well chosen, creating a fun and easy to understand the concept. Words included in the glossary are mostly highlighted throughout the text, though strangely, the concept of "organic matter" which is included on the page discussing the main ingredients of soil, is not mentioned previously in the text, though it is defined in the glossary. By entering the ABDO Kids Code provided, readers can access additional content, including a video, printable activities, and websites for further information. A few quibbles make this an optional purchase - one of the printable activities is for making your own fossils which doesn't seem to fit with the soil theme, the video from GlobalSoilWeek.org feels a bit heavy-handed for the intended audience, and the website link to the EPA misses the mark.
