Was the White House always white? Did someone actually burn down the White House? Is it true that a person went skinny-dipping in a White House fountain? More than 200 years old, the White House is no ordinary house. The site of many significant moments in American history, this is certainly a home of great importance. I liked this book; the illustrations are great, and the information is presented in such a way that young readers can understand it. However, this book was printed fairly recently. My concern is this: It is time for books such as this one to mention the land that was taken from Native Americans. The slaves who contributed to the construction (and upkeep) of the White House should have been mentioned, as well. I understand the need to keep the tone light enough for young readers. However, the information could most definitely be included in the many captions present in this book. These facts, while not pleasant, are part of history, and continuing to leave them out suggests that they either did not happen or are not important.
I was hopeful that more complete information could be found using the websites listed at the end of the book. Unfortunately, four of the links led to a ... 404 error and a Sorry, this part of history has not been written yet.
For that reason, I can not give this book (or others like it) more than three stars.
Tandem reading with my oldest (7 years) for his homeschool work and sharing the info with our 4-year old and our toddler. The book is recommended for ages 5-9. Great intro to the White House, especially in light of our upcoming move to the area. We're taking it slow. The book has Smithsonian weblinks; will try to remember to comment on those in the future. Text, photos, other graphics, and layout are engaging.
