Okay, so this isn't a duology, like I originally thought; it just seems that the remaining volumes are out of print, or were never translated in the first place. It wouldn't surprise me if it were the latter, because damn do things go downhill fast here.

The action is muddy to the point where it can be hard to tell what's going on. Is that person getting hit with gusts of wind? Fire? Some kind of corrupting energy? Who can say? Not that it really matters, because in order for action to amount to anything, you have to feel some kind of investment in what's going on. After two volumes, I...really don't. Maybe someone who's played the game Kahn is based off of would get more out of it, but considering the poor quality of the writing, I doubt it.

Let's talk about that, shall we? A surprising portion of volume 2 is just Nobu (and sometimes other characters) fighting nameless demons. Then characters get introduced out of the blue who we're supposed to know, so I assume they were important in the game, but who knows? They're given so little development, that it's hard to care. And when the arch-villain Tollman finally makes his debut, the fight between him and Nobu boils down to the two of them hurling painfully bad one-liners at each other, as people turn into demons at the sound of Tollman's organ music.

I actually find myself rather glad the rest of this series is (seemingly) unavailable in English, because Shin Megami Tensei: Kahn is a mess. What started out in the first volume as a shaky but promising side story to one of my favorite RPG series has quickly devolved into a lifeless, poorly-written, brainless action series, devoid of any personality. I'm only giving this 2 stars instead of 1, on the off-chance that someone who's played Shin Megami Tensei: IF might get more out of this.

Stick to the games. A lot of them have been translated into English (but not Shin Megami Tensei: IF, hence some of the problems), and all the ones I've played are markedly better than this unfortunate tie-in.

I feel like I need to take a shower after this one. And - the rest of the series is available only in French and Japanese. The French would not be a problem, but I can't get it from a library in the US. grrrrr
