‘Press-Ganged’ is a phrase not often heard these days, referring of course to the wholly unsavoury practice of forcing crew aboard navy ships in the past. Although it’s unusual to hear the term used today, in modern times people on sailing holidays sometimes feel as if they have been!

The story starts with a family who are excited to be going on holiday to Ibiza – a mother Angela, her boyfriend Bert, her son Thomas, aged 11, and her daughter Zoe, a precocious 14 year old. However, Bert finds out he cannot come, so the rest of the family must travel without him.

Meanwhile, sailing across the Mediterranean in their yacht, are a young Spanish family: Manuel, his wife Esperanza, and their 12 year old son Pedro. They are also heading to Ibiza - in order to undertake charter bookings.

The paths of the two families cross; friendships form and their fates intertwine. The intriguing ongoing drama also involves various auxiliary characters who are connected to Bert back in London, and the story pleasingly unfolds.

The foreign setting is excellently and authentically described. There is a wealth of yachting information, intriguing plotting, accurate portrayal of childhood growing pains, familiar family quarrels and reconciliations, and even a hidden treasure trove – all of which ensure Press Ganged is a rewarding and engaging read which will surely appeal to all teenagers.

The book ends on a cliff-hanger, and the sequel Press Ganged 2 should be out for this Christmas. I’m very much looking forward to it!
