Riches & Rags

Lane Carson is used to getting her own way—apart from throwing hissy fits and pulling outrageous stunts to attract her workaholic husband’s attention, Lane lives a seemingly perfect life. But things are seldom as they seem…

Lane is blindsided and her charmed and pampered existence uprooted, when her shattered husband, Micky Capello, breaks the devastating news: he’s lost the family fortune and is leaving on a quest to “find himself.” The most daunting part is they’re losing the nannies—and the children Lane barely knows will live with her.

Without the leisure to wallow in misery and self-pity, Lane is catapulted into an adventure of a lifetime that’s filled with outlandish and often emotionally charged escapades of trial and error, all with her über supportive—albeit dysfunctional—family in tow.

This comedic drama is bursting with outlandish hilarity and warmth, and is sure to keep you roaring with laughter, while tugging at your heart with its endearing, candid reflection. A must read!

Where do I begin my praise for this book? I read half the book in ONE sitting (then life got in my way). Lane lived my fear - being left high and dry by the breadwinner. Just when you thought the book was over, a new twist is added and the story continues! Smooth story that gives the reader a mix of chicklit, romance, suspense and family drama. Enjoyable read that is hard to put down.

I received a free reading copy of this book and am voluntarily reading it.

An easy read with a bit of a twist on the usual rags to riches story this novel got my attention fairly early into the read. Lane is presented at first as a spoilt rich wife who neglects her children by leaving them to be raised entirely by the hired help. I didn't care for her much of course but it didn't take long for her circumstances to change and her heart to catch up with her. She took on her challenges with minimal fanfare and I liked her attitude. Yes it was a 180 from the start but when we're given her back story it's not surprising that common sense and purpose became her norm again. I wish we had had a bit more of her history. What we were given was enough to fill in the blanks but I was missing some of the relationship with her mother.

The best friend/cousin role was solid. I loved him and I loved their bond, it's not a common close relationship so that was refreshing. By contrast her girlfriend, that ends up helping out with the kids, came a bit out of nowhere for me, where was she at the start of the story?

The admiral was darling- I just loved him and his role in the novel. He was just the kind of tough love she needed and everyone should be so lucky to have a soul like that around to keep us straight. I was also thrilled by her dad and her "stepbrother", that was ridiculous and hilarious!

There is a love interest and he's perfect of course but he added to the plot for me and didn't control it. I really enjoyed this read, it's different enough to feel like I read something new.

The Blurb :

My Thoughts :
We start off seeing Lane Carson as a snobby spoilt posh wife who cares little for her children that seem to be raised by nannies. She is not a likeable person, that is until husband Micky tells Lane he has lost everything in the business and Lane must leave the home the next day and take the children whille he goes to find himself and try to re gain the business. This is a prime example how life can change in a split second. Lane soon does a 180 and finds herself having to actually look after her children and moving in to the attic of old man George's home.
This was a slow start for me but soon picked up as I got lost in the life of the Carson's. There was a great supporting cast, Lane's cousin, Dad, Best Friend, and even a new love interest. I loved the twist near the end and how Lane handled her husband, never trust a scorned women.
This story was nicely put together and I hope this isnt the end of Lane and her new life as im sure there is so much more we can see from her.
Great debut from Camille Nagasaki.

A wonderful read

This was one of those enjoyable reads, about the ups and downs in a person's life. Lane is one of those strong characters. The story was intriguing, and shows life can change in the blink of an eye, and out of nowhere. Carson needs to find herself and a new life, as well as provide for her children. This story was such a wonderful, refreshing read. A great story with a meaning for all. It has a moral whether it meant to, or not. Wonderful read.

Money corrupts people. For some, they put it away for their children’s education or they put it away for retirement. For others, they give it to charity. These practices will never be taken for granted, as they will always be considered as selfless. There are way too many though, who spend it until it is all gone…corruption in its most primal state. It is right beneath your nose until you’re left wondering—what should I have done with what I had? What do I do now? This is where Nagasaki’s story begins.

Lane Carson has the world. She has riches. She has an amazing yacht. She has a huge, luxury of a house—designed by her. She has two children. She has nannies. Her cousin is her best friend. She has a perfectly handsome husband…who doesn’t seem to understand the importance of an anniversary. He would rather work all day than spend time with his wife. Obviously, not everything is perfect in paradise. When her husband informs her that he has lost the family fortune and needs to go “find himself”, he doesn’t give her an ultimatum. She has to move out with the children in two days! No more nannies. No more beautiful mansion. No more money. How can that be? Lane’s world comes crashing down around her quicker than anything else that she has ever done, but she has to figure out a way to be strong for the two children who she barely knows. Moving out to Kitsilano, a favored place when she was young, Lane learns the basics of parenting, friends and finding one’s self among the mass of people struggling to also make a living. She finds meaning in her life that doesn’t have anything to do with money…she finds happiness. Right up until the moment when an old friend informs her that nothing is ever as it seems, especially when it comes to business tycoons. Can Lane find the strength to leave her past behind to make a beautiful new world with the people who she has come to know as family…or will she fall back into lies and secrets again?

Nagasaki has a superb story, filled with fantastic character development, emotional prowess, and creative content. All of these characters have strong personalities, some that readers can sympathize with and others that make them cringe. Riches & Rags is very well-written and holds a fast pace, allowing readers to become easily immersed in the lives that this author has created. It is riveting, entertaining and will leave readers laughing and smiling throughout its entirety. If you are a reader of Women’s Fiction and Humor, you may want to pick this up.

In her debut novel, Riches & Rags, author Camille Nagasaki weaves an entertaining tale that follows Lane Carson's personal journey of self-discovery, when she is blindsided and suddenly finds her privileged life turned upside down after her workaholic husband Micky Capello has lost their family fortune, and is leaving them on a quest to "find himself."

Set in Vancouver and told in the first person narrative, Riches & Rags is an entertaining tale that easily draws the reader into Lane's life, and the challenges that she is suddenly faced with while picking up the pieces of her family's life.

Riches & Rags is a wonderful story that had a great mixture of humor and drama that will easily keep you engaged and turning the pages. You can't help but feel for Lane as she learns how to embrace and overcome the hilarious challenges, trials and tribulations of starting over, while also discovering that she is a strong and independent woman, no matter what type of lifestyle she may lead.

I really enjoyed following Lane on her journey, she is so witty and her antics were so frigging hilarious that I caught myself snickering as she found herself caught up in some pretty crazy trials and tribulations that she and her family had to overcome. This story is so much fun that it will leave you wanting more. I look forward to reading the sequel!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I enjoyed the richly vivid description of Vancouver. The author easily transports the reader to this picturesque city that it made me wish that I could take a trip there.

Riches & Rags is a captivating story about life, choices, decisions, regrets, happiness, family, love, and discovering what the really important things are in life.
