Meek "Egg" Lambert's erratic wife, Jadis, leaves him, then returns, but in the interim, one of his old flames has taken Jadis' place in the Lambert household
“Dessert is just canned pears, blind albinos swimming in syrup. Something about the way they move, bobbing, bothers Jadis; they remind her of Egg. You can keep those pears in that sweet syrup as long as you want, but they never darken or drown. They just bob forever, dumb and innocent. They're like babies: nothing you can say to them matters; they aren't even in the same world as us. They're lucky that way, because they're free.”
Jadis proved to be a fantastic read all the way through. Chowder has a very funny way of using language that is so effortlessly pleasant that I found myself surprised as the book grew to take on increasingly serious themes. I laughed a fair bit but was left with a heavy heart; this made for a very unique literary experience.
A quirky, original love story, full of humor and oblique commentary. Any intelligent film maker should jump on this story, as it would make an intelligent romantic comedy.
