Angus McBride has been one of the artists who has helped to give life back to the many warriors of battlefields long washed over. His art features in notably the Osprey series of books, themselves detailed studies of various conflicts, armies and eras of military history.

The art is the main feature of this book. Each painting capturing imagined moments in time so as to better help contemporary minds to imagine and realise conditions and circumstances as experienced in the near and distant pasts. McBride's appreciation for history adds tremendous value to his art in that he is dedicated to depicting realism with each stroke of the brush.

The book has various paintings which have a body of text explaining the moment in time as far as the historical and fashion context goes. Though one can read this book to learn something about history, the art itself speaks more than...well words. That being said Martin Windrow has done a splendid job with his compilation of images and in writing the relevant text needed.

The book begins with an interesting interview with McBride discussing his inspirations, experience and methods. Insightful and splendid especially for those who wish to re imagine history in some form themselves or those fellow artists looking to find out how legends do it themselves.

A super read for history and war buffs.
