Children Of The Future, by Jane Suen.

Telly enjoyed his part-time job and gladly took on the responsibility of driving the school bus. He prided himself in making sure all the kids in his care arrived at the Rocky Flats Elementary school on time, and then later, drive them all home again afterwards.
But today was different.
When all the children mysteriously go missing, Telly is drawn in to investigate. The local police, along with the town’s residents, are in a panic with emotions running high as the search spreads to the neighbouring towns.

A compelling story full of tension, as the race to find the children escalate. An enjoyable read.

Paranormal mystery? Or simply ordinary?
Think of Children of the Future as X-Files Lite. Author Jane Suen presents readers with a mystery—the children and teachers in Rocky Flats’ rural school disappear without a trace. Her hero, Telly, frantically tracks them down with the help of Billy, the school’s lone survivor.

Throw in footprints that stop suddenly in a clearing, a remote warehouse filled with black SUVs, citizens convinced the students were abducted by aliens and readers begin to wonder if ET will appear before the book ends. (No spoiler alert here, Suen’s wants you to wonder.)

Telly, the school’s bus driver, grows more and more frantic as each lead crumbles to dust. While police organize search parties and grids, he drives farther and farther from Rocky Flats looking for answers. When everyone believes they’ve solved the mystery, someone abducts Telly.

Suen creates a tight storyline, with plenty of tension in the beat points. When the abductors finally appear, however, her tightly constructed narrative deflates—at least for readers who demand a sharper edge. Those who prefer sugar-coated endings won’t notice.

Readers may also find themselves puzzled by the novel’s last chapter, more so perhaps the last paragraph. Suen tosses in a closing so abrupt, so out of character for her writing, readers may wonder (as I do) if the eBook file didn’t drop a few pages.

That single last paragraph, however, might also turn the book around like a Twilight Zone twist ending, and make readers rethink her narrative. If this were her intention, her novice writing skills undermined the outcome.

Children of the Future showcases Suen’s inexperience in almost every respect. Her prose is dull, dull, dull. Very little dialogue, full page paragraphs, and (when she uses it) stumbling dialogue. She forces readers to plod through wearisome salutations in every scene (“Hello,Telly,” Hello, Sally”), unnecessary information and segues (“Bye. I’m leaving now.”) and constant replays of earlier scenes as the characters ceaselessly update each other on the past few pages.

We might be able to forgive Suen—it’s her first book—but too many other first novels deliver compelling prose and vivid characterizations. Reading Children of the Future made me appreciate the complaints of reviewers who want overly restrictive gatekeepers to screen indie writers.

Suen can craft a good outline, but she needs a good editor or time with experienced writers who won’t simply pat her on the back for her efforts so far. Suen can craft a good outline, but she needs a good editor or time with experienced writers who won’t simply pat her on the back for her efforts so far. I hope she does. Where her talent breaks through, it shines. With a good mentor, I think she’ll produce four-star indie thrillers.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t read Children of the Future; I’m saying if you read books for scintillating prose as well as the story, you’ll probably close this one after the second or third chapter.

Download the sample. If you can tolerate her narrative style, you’ll like the book. If her writing annoys you as much as it did me, it won’t be worth the effort to finish the book.

I posted this review as a contribution to the premiere of #MysteryThrillerWeek. Join the fun.

Rating system:
5 = Delicious dialogue, crisp prose, clever characters & compelling plot
4 = Great read, won’t want to stop (Some reviewers rate this 5 stars)
3 = Worth buying (but…)
2 = I will tell you what audience will like this, but other readers might want to look elsewhere
1 = If I review a book this bad I felt seriously compelled to warn you

The story follows one week like no other in a small town, where a 25 kids and 3 teachers inexplicably disappear. Alien kidnapping? Government conspiracy? Magic? The protagonists, bus driver Telly and young student Billy, follow clues—but will they be in time to solve the mystery before any one gets hurt?
From the title, I suspected the missing students had been sent into the future, but the real answer might be even more shocking. The author does a nice job of tying clues from the earlier chapters at the end.
A few issues kept this from being a 5-star read. The story has a huge cast of named characters, and is a little slow to start. It isn’t until chapter 5 where I was really intrigued. There are times when I felt the paragraphs could have been broken up, because there are several large walls of text which had me looking for white space.
I received this book at no cost and at with no obligation to review.

Children of the future by Jane Suen is the first book that I have read by this Author and I thought it was a good book and even though it was a fast read I was not disappointed. Children of the Future is a short, mysterious read. This read kept me guessing on what was going to happen next. I loved everything about Telly and how involved he was. He was really concerned for the missing children. I would recommend this book for Teens its short enough to keep them interested and I think they will really enjoy this read. All and all this book was a really good read I like how it was a different story line then what I usually read and I look forward to reading more books by Jane Suen.

I have read a few books from this author and she continues to blow my mind. This is a short story that will make you want more. I could not put this book down for anything. I wanted to know what happened. It only took me a couple of hours to devour this book.

Telly is the neighborhood’s bus driver and he loves it. He knows all of his kids on his route personally. Telly gets up and does his normal bus route and he then goes to his other job. He works for a nice man when the kids are in school. Telly comes back to the school to pick the kids up but no one comes out of the building. He parks his bus and goes into the school and there is no one there. Telly ends up finding one boy that was hiding. The town sends search parties to see if they can find the kids and teachers that just vanished. Telly finds some clues but will he be able to put them together? Where did all these people go and why are they missing?

I absolutely loved this book. The storyline had me hooked right from the beginning. It felt like you were trying to solve the mystery with Telly. This talented author kept you on your toes all the way until the end. This author is becoming one of my favorites for short stories. I can’t wait to see what she will write about next.

Children Of The Future by Jane Suen

5 Stars

I have read all of this authors books and she never ceases to amaze me. Through most of the book you sit scratching your head asking where in the world is she going with this story, savoring every word along the way. This was a quick read, full of content. Not sure how she does it but she can in just a few pages build the best characters and her storylines are always out of this world.

With so much going on in the world today this story was spot on, well maybe not all of it but if you read it you’ll know what I’m talking about. I loved Telly and the part he played and loved how there was enough of a build up that I could use my imagination for his future :) the ending was one I did not see coming...my thought process was way off as it was pretty obvious when the truth came out, but again this author weaves a story that when your done reading you just sit and think for a few minutes.

Thank you Miss Suen for another thought provoking read. I love how she is so unpredictable..you never know what you are gonna get when you open one of her books.

Awesome!!

The mystery of a small class of students and teachers disappearing at the end of a school day is downright frightening to even think about. The author teases just enough that you feel things are going to get better but soon, you are just as involved and worried as the poor people in the little town of Rocky Flats. Even as things seem to be ending and normal days starting again there is another slight twist that might give a chill when you read the last page (it did me). Overall a page turner I enjoyed reading.

A great read about mystery. Telly's usual working week is altered when his school bus of children disappears. With only one child left, Telly panics and starts a search for the other children, one search turns into several as the whole town becomes involved. Can they find the missing children before its too late?
A great read, Well developed plot with twists and turns that just couldn't put down. Well developed characters like Telly doing his best but with his worries underneath or Billy inquisitive but vulnerable underneath. Great cast of supporting characters like the friendly and supportive Ray or the suspicious Steve.
I loved the visual detail throughout the novel like wit the school full of life and people made eerly empty wonderfully written. Or the clearing under the moon by the lake beautiful but still mysterious with the footprints in the mud. Also loved the small details like the watch and te footprints small but so vivid its as if you're actually there.
I also liked the routine every day feel of the first few chapters contrasting with the unusual mystery of the situation beautifully written. I also liked the use of the days in the chapter headings giving the novel a fast paced feel was a great addition.I loved the use of mystery with suspense drawn out to perfection with details revealed slowly, making you want to read on to find out what happened Overall, a great read and I would give it five stars.

I must start this review with the preface that I absolutely adore Jane Suen, and so every book of hers until this point has been a hit, 5 stars easily for me. I was a tad let down with ‘Children of The Future.’ Upon further looking at reviews and goodreads I found out this was Suen’s first novel and so things really made sense. This is on par with a first time novel from most authors and in the long run it made things easier for me to digest at the end of the day.

Children of The Future is a twisty and mysterious tale of a small town rocked by the sudden disappearance of a bus full of students and their teachers. All have gone without much of a hint as to where except one, Telly. A strong main character among many I still struggled to find his voice in this. The bus driver, also spared from the mysterious disappearing act, teams with Telly, the parents, and the police to try and figure out what happened and how to bring home the children. The trail is complicated and a tad slow, but intriguing enough to wonder what is going on and keep reading. Just as it seems they may have figured things out Telly disappears and even more shocking twists arise. Overall the ending seemed to round out the story and left me for the most part satisfied. While this isn’t a strong five star read for me I enjoyed it enough to give it a solid four stars. I look forward to seeing what else is available, as we await new stuff, from the talented Jane Suen.

Children Of The Future
By: Jane Suen
5 out of 5 stars

The story Children Of The Future by Jane Suen is a book that I found imaginative and interesting. It is what I would call a short story or novella. It had quite a way of grabbing my attention and holding it from the first chapter to the last. I enjoyed reading about the character of Telly. He is the town bus driver who one afternoon finds all of the children, with the exception of one, missing. Telly enjoys driving the children to and from school. He is quite concerned about the missing children and goes out to search for them along with Billy, the one child that he has found hidden in a cabinet. Will Telly and Billy find the children? Read this book to find out. The story has an atmosphere of mystery and I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. While the story is a bit shorter than some, I found myself identifying with the characters. I enjoyed many of them that are introduced and how they interact with Telly. Don’t miss out on a story that the author has made come alive. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommended.

The reading level seems appropriate for 4th-6th grade students, but parents may feel differently about the subject matter. Written from the viewpoint of a part-time school bus driver, Children Of The Future describes his efforts to understand what has happened when an entire school of students and teachers disappears one afternoon. Only one student escapes the mysterious event, and interestingly enough, he is allowed to tag along with bus driver Telly driving around the countryside looking for answers rather than returning to his mother as the only school age child left in town or be interviewed by police. In a surprising twist of events, Telly himself is the one to find all the missing, seemingly unharmed. The book is set at a former nuclear site, includes visits from aliens, and seems to imply at the end that the sole unscathed survivor of the genetic engineering experiment is doomed to become a school shooter. Could spark interesting conversations at school and at home.

Children of The Future by Jane Suen. This is such a good short mystery. Its the story of bus driver Terrance "Telly" O'Brian and student Billy. One afternoon Telly goes to his bus to find all the children missing and also 3 teachers are gone. How could all 25 children and 3 teachers disappear all of a sudden? Telly and Billy are determined to find them because Telly really cares for the kids and the whole town of Rocky Flats is in panic mode. As Telly and Billy follow footprints that stop suddenly in a clearing and find a creepy warehouse filled with black SUVs, the town has decided Aliens have abducted them! Police start search parties and everyone is genuinely doing everything they can. Just when they think they've got it figures out Telly goes missing! Read Children of the Future to find out if they find the children and Telly!

Children of the Future by Jane Suen was an awesome short read that I could not put down. Bus driver Telly, pulls up to a school and comes to find that all the children are missing, all but Billy who Telly finds hiding in a cabinet. Needing and wanting answers Telly and Billy set out to find out who took the children and where they are. Nothing like this has ever happened in Rocky Flats and the town is in a uproar but also rallies together in the search and only hope that it’s not too late to save them all.

I read this in one sitting and couldn’t put this down. The author did an amazing job with this, and the only thing I can say negative about it was I wish it was longer because I didn’t want the book to end. I give this book 5 stars and highly recommend.

Children Of The Future by Jane Suen is a four star novel. As a teacher, this novel was somewhat hard to read because of having the missing children. I could totally relate with Telly, the main character, because he felt like he couldn’t stop until he figured out what had happened to the missing children from the school. With Billy by his side, they were able to look for the other children that were missing from the school Billy went to. He has no idea why he was spared, other than the fact that he had hidden in a cabinet because he was so scared. As this novel unfolds, the reader learns about why the children were taken and how that purpose can drive the future.

Children Of The Future was an interesting read. A group of children and their teachers suddenly disappear and they are discovered missing by the school bus driver Telly. Telly discovers someone was left behind and they really together to try and find the kids and teachers. I found the story line to be very unique and I was shocked by the reasoning of the kidnapping. I did feel like the book ended on a cliffhanger. I loved how kind and thoughtful Telly was toward the kids. He was also extremely motivated to locate them and went out on a limb to follow a possible lead. I really enjoyed this short easy read.

4 Stars!!!!

This is the third book from this author that I have read. I find that the author's writing style is
refreshing. The genre of this book is out of my comfort genre but I found it to be quite an addicting read. The suspense and mystery really kept me glued to the pages. I don't read mysteries often but this was a nice change.

I really love Telly's character and the part he played in the story. The way he cares for the kids is really endearing. I was really at the end of my seat as the drama and mystery played out. I found that the author had a great way of drawing out the story and the intrigue. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely be reading more from this author in the Future.

A fast, compelling mystery. Where are the children? When students vanish without many clues the theories and questions start out reasonable and grow fanatical as the days pass without answers. And why was Billy left?

You get a real sense that Telly the bus driver who discovered them missing is getting more and more wound up. Something rather shocking happens with him and the end is really thought provoking. Did it mean what I thought? I don’t know. Maybe. It could have.

If you are a fan of Twilight Zone, or Outer Limit type stories, you should find this little mystery a fun read.

Children Of The Future
by Jane Suen

This is a short, mysterious, wonderful read. The author kept me guessing what could have possibly happened to the teachers and kids all the way up till the end. There is a good message in this book and I found it to be well delivered for all ages. I liked how concerned Telly was and how involved he got in the search and the fact that he took Billy with him and let him be a big part of the search. This was definitely a unique and interesting read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I highly recommend this book.

Children of the Future by Jane Suen, did not end the way I was expecting it to end. I gasped and had an aha moment at the exact same time.

Telly and Billy working together to find the kids was very sweet. Telly went above and beyond what you think a school bus driver would do, but then again it's a small town and everyone knows everyone so it's a bit different.

This is a fairly short story which seemed even shorter due to getting sucked into the story. I would definitely recommend this book.

Children of the Future by Jane Suen was an interesting and mysterious read. This is not my first book by her as I have read several. Jane has a way to pull you in and keep you interested. Her books are unique and a little quirky. This book was very different. Not bad just different. I did like it because with all Janes book she throws something in there that we aren’t expecting. Overall I think Jane does a good job and I like her books. I’d read others. 4 star rating.

Children of the Future is a novel by Jane Suen. This is my first novel by this author.

In the small town of Rocky Flats, the week starts like any other but when 25 students and 3 teachers disappear, the town rallies together to solve this mystery. With help from the bus driver whose name is Telly and another student they follow the clues in search of the missing people.

From the title of this novel, I thought the plot had something to do with the future like kids from the future coming to the past for an unknown reason. But the mystery is more than even I thought it was going to be.

The novel started out slow, but it did keep me interested. With the holiday, I wasn’t able to do a binge read like I usually do, so I had to keep putting it down, but once it got into the story, I was reading it more quickly.

For anyone who wants to interesting and unique mystery, I would recommend.

Children Of The Future was a very different book than I am used to reading but it was interesting. The book is about a school bus driver named Telly. He discovers one day that the children that ride his bus have gone missing, with the exception of one boy (billy) who was hidden away in the cabinet on the bus. He takes it upon himself to follow the clues and with the help of Billy, he searches for the missing kids. Telly is the main characters and he is supposed to be in his 20s but for some reason I couldn’t not picture him being that old. He seemed very juvenile to me. Regardless this was an interesting book. The book is YA and I think older kids and young teens would enjoy this book. There is mystery and suspense and clues that you follow as the reader that help lead to the missing kids.

I did enjoy this story. Its full of mystery and makes an unlikely person a hero.

Telly is a bus driver for a school in a little village. One route day he turns up to collect the kids and everyone is missing. Everyone that is except Billy who hid in a cupboard.

Together Telly and Billy start a search for the rest of the missing children and Telly uncovers a secret mission that is looking to make the world a more peaceful place

Suen has a gift for writing compelling, thought-provoking tales. This novella kept me engaged and quite frankly kept me guessing the whole way. I found the characters to be relatable, and the plot felt much bigger than the few pages it was contained within. This mystery is one I will most heartedly recommend to others. Just a wonderful book.

Children of The Future by Jane Suen
My rating 4 out of 5 stars

Everything I have read by this author so far as been short but very enjoyable. She knows how to put enough details, story line and punch into a few pages and I love it.

Telly is a loveable character. His concern for the missing children and his initiative to find them is beautiful. How can all the kids go missing except for one? I would highly recommend this book. Read to find out what happens with the missing children and enjoy all the mystery revolving around this lone bus driver and his one companion. Will they be able to uncover the truth?

The ending and well the whole story really was very well written. I again want to stress how intelligent Jane is in that she can fit so much punch and impact in just a short amount of time. I have not read a book from her that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed.

Living in a small town I gotta say this book kinda freaked me out. The bus drivers do know this much about the other community members. This books bus driver goes above and beyond for his towns people. One student hid and didn't get taken too. He goes with Telly to search. Me personally... I think Billy's mom should have demanded he come home immediately. But the search continues. I thought this book showed how awesome small towns are. Everyone comes together to help. I was happy with how this book turned out until the very last page. That last page though... not cool.
