I almost don't want to review this book, because it is so good at what it sets out to do - making the technique of filigree accessible - that I fear it will destroy the mystique of any pieces I now produce! However, that would not be fair on Rhodes-Moen, who has surely produced the best starting point to any jeweller who aspires to add filigree to their repertoire. There is a slight bias towards the American market in terms of the chemicals recommended, and surprisingly for such delicate work she does not explore the option of using solder paste, but these are minor quibbles. The projects are laid out in a clear order of increasingly difficulty with lots of helpful diagrams and full colour photographs along the way, and a beautiful photograph of the finished piece as inspiration. Rhodes-Moen also takes the time to underscore the importance and correct sequence of pre-finishing and polishing, which is never wasted information! Absolutely one of my favourite jewellery books.

This book has directions for some beautiful pieces but the author seems to shrug off the fact that soldering is out of reach for many home crafters. Even with the mini torches that are now on the market, I think many people would get frustrated with the results they get. I've been taking jewelry classes for a while now but I still sometimes struggle with soldering—and this in a fully equipped jewelry studio—and soldering is a component of every project in this book. So, be warned. That said, gorgeous work and good luck with it...
