GRACE DAWSON is desperate. Her father is dead and her mum is in prison for killing the man who attacked her. She is about to turn eighteen and homeless. Her options are limited. Life is bleak.
NOAH CARTER is twenty-four, a writer, and burdened by his family responsibilities. Forced to live in the same small town he grew up in, he knows it would be wrong to wish for a different life.
When Noah offers Grace a place to stay, it is an act of generosity that she has little choice but to accept. As they spend time together, their feelings grow beyond friendship and they become increasingly important parts of each other’s lives. But it’s not just their lives they have to think about and the challenges they face threaten to overwhelm their relationship. Both make mistakes but can they overcome their own faults to forgive each other’s?
FAULT is a story about love, loss, family and forgiveness. It’s a story about life.
fault noun [folt] 1. A flaw or defect which prohibits perfection. 2. A weakness or defect in character. 3. Responsibility for a mistake or wrongdoing. 4.(verb) To find error in; to blame.
Fault is the third novel in Nicola Hudson’s Define series but can be read as a standalone from Curve and Heart, although it does contain spoilers if read out of sequence.
As well as being a writer, I love reading and reading about reading. My taste goes from Shakespeare to John Green...and much of what lies between! Dickens, check. Austen, check. Atwood, check.
Over Christmas 2012, I discovered the joy of new adult fiction and, inspired by Colleen Hoover and Tammara Webber, I decided to try my hand at writing my own NA novel.
I love the friendliness of the Indie writer community and have been overwhelmed by the support of followers interested in my journey. Please feel free to monitor my publishing progress via my Facebook page, Twitter or blog :-)
My first novel, Curve, was released in October 2013. My second novel, Heart, is a standalone companion to Curve and was released in November 2014. The final novel in the Define series, Fault, will be published in October 2016.
Fault is the third and final book in the Define trilogy. Each book is written as a standalone story, but as it includes the same characters in all three books, and possible spoilers, I would recommend you read them in the order they were written.
This is Grace's story, and what a story it is! Grace has already been introduced in Heart, as Jake's younger sister. I already knew she didn't have the best of childhoods from that short glimpse, but in this story, she faces even more heartache. At 17, on the cusp of her 18th birthday, Grace is at rock bottom and more alone than ever.
I was drawn into the story from the first page, it hits the ground running as it starts off with a pretty harrowing scene, leaving Grace with nowhere to go, and no one to turn to. Separated from mother and her younger brother Josh, and held in limbo by the welfare system due to her rapidly approaching birthday, she is completely on her own. Her only release from the horrible situation she is in comes in the form of a part-time job, and a perfectly lovely young man called Noah.
Ah Noah, what can I say about him? Well, just like the other leading men in Nicola Hudson's books, he is perfect book boyfriend material. Hudson writes wonderful men. Period. Noah is 24, and a writer. And like Grace, life has also dealt him a few bad hands. He could be bitter, but he isn't at all. He's kind, thoughtful, and very sensitive to Grace's needs. He's there to be a friend, someone for her to lean on, a shoulder to cry on and provide much needed support. And of course, the closer they get, they begin to develop feelings that are more than just friendship.
Now, I also have to mention Max. Oh, how I loved Max, Noah's father. I loved the relationship between father and son, the way they interacted was so touching. He didn't have much dialogue, but when he did have something to say, it made an impact. I also loved seeing the characters from Curve and Heart make cameos in this story. Cass and Flynn are my favourite couple from this series, and it was nice to see them pop up again.
While I was sad to say goodbye to the characters of this series, I have loved every moment of this journey. I have laughed, I've swooned, and I've cried. Nicola Hudson has created wonderful characters, people that I fell in love with, and who stole my heart.
Like everyone else , I was so looking forward to this book as I'd absolutely loved Curve and Heart. The way the author writes makes her books so easy to read and she quickly pulls you into the story. It's almost like she giving you hug while you read. This book could be read as a standalone but you would really miss out not reading at least Heart beforehand, especially as you will meet the wonderful Jake. There are links to the first two books in Fault , which I loved. Fault is a delightful and thoughtful story about Jake's sister Grace. It flows beautifully and encourages you to keep reading to find out what happens next. Grace is a really interesting character who has been through an awful lot in her young life but finds a determination to keep going and battle through - so like her brother! She meets Noah when everything seems against her and if you think the story is all about their relationship , you are very much mistaken because it is so much more. As much as I liked Grace , there where times I just wanted to give Noah a huge cuddle .The other characters are really interesting and I adored Max. This is an emotional book but beautifully written and although it includes some serious issues they are tackled with honestly and reverence. It is a wonderful end to a stunning series and I thoroughly recommend it .
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Having enjoyed the two previous books that have been released by this author, I was very much looking forward to Fault and I'm pleased to say it didn't disappoint.
One of the things that struck me with this book was how real it felt. I'd got that vibe from the other two books and wondered whether it was because I'm British, the author is British, the characters are set in Britain so maybe I identified more because of the things mentioned that are specific to the UK. But then I realised that other books set in the UK and written by British authors haven't given me that same feeling so I'm putting that down as a strength of Nicola Hudson's storytelling.
She creates a world that feels real with characters that are believable and who have things happen to them that sadly are also real and that many a reader can identify with.
I don't believe in giving too many details away about the storyline in reviews but I will say that you go on a journey with these characters as they face challenges and adapt to what life sends them.
Wow when asked by Nicola Hudson's to read her new book I never feared for one second I wouldn't enjoy this. She never lets me down. This is a book with so much Heartache that you feel so darn sorry for the main characters. No one should have that much sadness brought into their lives, especially at such a young age. I love how Grace and Noah are brought together, bringing each other that influx of oxygen that was much needed. Souls merely surviving were now being given the chance of living again. Grace is a force to be reckoned with. She may only be 17 but her spirit is fierce. She never ceases to amaze me with her strength. This book shows you, no matter what obstacles life throws at you you can either let it keep you down or get up fighting. I don't want to give away to much for fear of spoiling it, but I will say if you're after a book that is filled love, desire, loyalty, sadness and hope this is definitely the book for you. Another amazing 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read. I've been on this journey with Nicola since Curve and each book just gets better. Can't wait to see what else she pulls out of the bag.
Be prepared to have your heart cry out in pain while reading Fault. This is an emotionally charged book that will leave you emotional for days after you are finished. Now I must say I have not read the previous books but I was able to read Fault with no issues. I do plan to go back and reading the previous books because if they are anything like Fault I know I will be in for a couple more really good books. I think I felt so much with Fault because the situations that Grace and Noah face are real ones that people have faced every day, it’s more moving for me at least when the author uses realistic events because more people can connect with the book that way versus some over the top drama or events. I was sucked into the story very quickly and it kept my attention from beginning to end. This is one I highly recommend for you all to read.
Firstly i want to start by saying thank you to Nicola for the privilege of received the ARC for fault. Having read heart and curve (please see my reviews) I had high expectations for fault, and thankfully these expectations were met. Having been surprised by the love I felt for heart and curve, the knowing that I was going to be engrossed in fault made me excited and reading about Grace and Noah's journey felt like home to me! Fault has be gripping from start to finish, and once again took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I cried, I laughed, I grieved and I got annoyed. Although fault can be read as a stand alone I highly recommend reading heart and curve before fault, just so that you can feel the loss of Jake in Graces life.
NEW FAVORITE!! This book was emotional, raw, real, and so addicting! Nicola Hudson blew me away with Fault! This story was not one for the faint of heart really. This characters went through some life changing things and the feelings that came from them were undeniably real. Even if you have never experienced the situations in this book, you will still connect with many of the emotions. This book showed the ugliness of life, but it also showed that you can never give up because you can always find some beautiful. The connection between Carter and Grace was palpable. The lives they led were real. The emotions they felt were so raw and true to anyone of the situation. This book appears to be a standalone in a series and I cannot wait to read the other books!
*~* I received an arc in return of a honest and unbiased review *~*
I've been eagerly awaiting fault after devouring heart and curve by Nicola and I absolutely loved them both. I had high expectations for this and boy did she deliver! I had so many emotions in reading this and stayed up late just so I could finish it. At times If I could of climbed In and slapped Noah I would, I wanted to bang graces and Noah's heads together at one point too! And then there was the heartbreak which was followed by tears. The words literally jumped out the pages at me. This is an beautifully written, emotional read and an epic finally to the series! Well done Nicola 5 amazing stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Okay, before you start to read this book, do you have your emergency supplies to hand? Hmmm? An industrial sized box of tissues (a given with any Nicola Hudson story!)? Chocolate? Good, now pull on those big girl panties because you’re going to need them…
“Light surrounds me when I’m with him, even if everywhere else is dark.”
Dearest Grace,
None of this is your fault. Do you hear me? You have gone through more in your nearly eighteen years than most adults experience in a lifetime.
I know it doesn’t seem like it at the moment, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. You, more than most, have the strength and fortitude to see this through and be the rock your family needs.
Go easy on Noah, he carries a heavy burden. I know, I know – he shouldn’t but some things are easier said than done.
Love,
Laura
“…I can’t imagine a future without you in it.”
Dear Noah,
Please listen to me – it wasn’t your fault!! The guilt weighs heavily on your shoulders, but you need to forgive yourself. Max wouldn’t wish that for you. Easier said than done though, right?!
Cherish Grace. Yours is the kind of connection that comes but once in a lifetime.
Your friend,
Laura
“I had wasted the todays in pursuit of the tomorrows.”
What resonates most with me in this story is to treasure each and every day with those we love for tomorrow is never promised. Make memories that will echo through the generations.
I could go on and on about this story, but I don’t want to bore you to tears. Just know that once you’ve read it, you’ll never be the same.

This is my first read by Ms Hudson and it was a very solid one. Lots of emotions successfully provoked. Knowing what I know about Heart, I don't think I have it in my heart to read it, too much for me, but if you have a high tolerance for the pain I'd say go for this series from the begining. I'm going to be fine just reading this entry because I can't do that to my poor emotions.
If you're like me, I can recommend Fault, it's an surprisingly realistic romance and the characters felt real, which is so hard to pull off. Though if you're looking for something sexy or saucy, this isn't it. It isn't chaste, but it's more of a fade to black kind of book in regards to sex.
Wow, my first read by Hudson, but it won't be my last. A seriously emotive story of Grace, a young woman whose live falls apart when she's almost raped, ripping what remains of her family apart. She's lucky enough to be offered a place to live with Noah, while she helps him care for his father who suffered a stroke and needs companionship and care. Although love blossoms with Noah, it's never an easy road, and Hudson makes them work hard for it. This was a really well written contemporary romance and I take my hat off at the amount of research that Hudson must have done into the British judicial system and effects of a stroke on the victim and family. There was an obvious intelligence to her writing, without it coming across as overbearing, or patronising - she make it understandable, and believable, and tragic. I shed tears a number of times, which is always a sign of a great read for me. This is a book about love, loss, family, sacrifice and ultimately of hope - that one day all of the painful memories of the past will be outweighed by the happy memories of the present, and those to come. A poingnant quote that I had to highlight was "I had wasted the todays in pursuit of the tomorrows." You really never know what direction your life is going to take, it can all change in a split second. The fact I've broken into my rare 5 star rating bank for this book says it all - loved it! **I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.**

I finished reading Curve and Heart for the first time (I'm a re-reader) well over a year ago. I've since had plenty of time to wonder what Fault might be about. Never in my wildest thoughts did I imagine what it would actually be about.
Fault is a standalone book but so much of what happened in Heart directly influences Grace that I can't recommend enough reading Heart before Fault.
Like the previous books in the Define series Fault navigates the up and downs of the different relationships in life, not just that of lovers. Due to the events in Heart, Grace has had to grow up quickly but from the glimpses of her we had before it's clear she's always been older than her years. Grace is 17 when Fault starts and Noah is 24. Ordinarily I wouldn't be comfortable with this age gap but already knowing and loving Grace helped and it became clear pretty early on she's not like other girls I've read. So, so much has happened in her seventeen years that no one would blame her if she let it overwhelm her. Not Grace. Those things only made her stronger.
Just as I've come to expect from Nicola's books, Fault gave me all the feels, made me think of the relationships in my own life and is a chock-full of life affirming quotes. Some of my favourite parts were the mentions of Neve and Jake from Heart who to this day still have a special place in my heart.
Fault is a well researched, emotionally charged addition to the Define series. I look forward to seeing what Nicola Hudson delivers next now that the series is complete.
