Simon Webb's book provides an introduction to the most important of the British northern saints, explores the links between them, and sets them against the background of their turbulent times. Includes Cuthbert, Bede, Aidan, Oswald, Wilfrid, Hilda and Ninian, among others. Foreword by Mark Bryant, the Bishop of Jarrow.
This is a fantastic little book, it is not only about Saints but it combines very important early English history with the lives of 12 Saints from northern England, (the two subjects being interrelated and one and the same thing). This book is a real eye opener. It also highlights the difference between Celtic and Roman Christianity throughout the book, particularly over the correct date for celebrating Easter, which was finally resolved at the synod of Whitby in 664 AD. Definitely a highly recommended read, especially if you are from the north like me.
