International Symposium on Acupuncture published 1973. Around 200 US doctors attending in St. Petersburg Florida. After president Nixon's historic visit to meet Chairman Mao Zedong in 1972, acupuncture awareness blew up in the US. This symposium in Florida aimed to educate curious doctors about the intricacy and depth of acupuncture treatment, and to emphasize there are no quick recipes of points to treat illnesses. To be an effective acupuncture doctor, you must understand the TCM fundamental theories. It goes into yin yang, five elements theory, antique points, Qi flow, meridians, etc. I particularly enjoyed the discussion on acupuncture analgesia/anesthesia. Since the authors conducted a lot of research in that arena, there are some very interesting details. There is very lengthy talk about treating headache, but not other diseases. It definitely presents an interesting approach to treatment, with some review of fundamentals which can never get old.
