From 1986 to 1998 Kivinov worked as a police officer and later as the chief of the homicide division in the 64th Precinct of the Kirovsky District Police Department, St. Petersburg. Kivinov's first book was written for the amusement of his friends and colleagues.
In 1995, Kivinov was accepted into the Writers Union of St. Petersburg.
