Don't Look Back: The David Bussau Story: How an Abandoned Child Became a Champion of the Poor

Rate this book
This rags-to-riches biography tells the story of David Bussau, once an orphan, now a millionaire businessman and founder of Opportunity International, one of the world's largest aid organizations. The main emphasis in this volume is on Bussau's humanitarian work that revolutionized overseas aid through the principles of microenterprise development, in which small repayable loans are offered to the poor so they can start and grow their own small businesses.

My review is about the book, not necessarily David's life. The first third of the book was so interesting, I was planning on handing it to my mum to read when I finished. Then the last 2/3 was more like a 'how to start an international charity' guide. There was a lot less on his personal life and all about the loans, travel, business meetings. Meaningful stuff but I skipped every second paragraph or page. It was just too dense and not interesting. He did great work, good on him, but I can see why this book didn't win any awards. I would give it 2.5 if I could.

Truly amazing what people can achieve in their efforts to assist others. An inspiring story.

Quite an inspiring story about how some people motivated by their own adverse experiences use it to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the lives of others. David is undoubtedly an incredibly humble man and gifted entrepreneur who used his gifts to be one of the founders of social entrepreneurship in the world and advocates for micro finance-based programs. Nothing is hidden. Revealing struggles as the organization he founded (Opportunity International) grows exponentially, and he transitions out of a hands on role.

I read this book in two and a half days. It was a good read and inspirational. David lead a whirl wind life helping the poor anywhere. Well written and easy to read. An abundance of names and places but not too many such that you get lost.
