Rate this book
Welcome to the the new world order. Welcome to our new Prime Minister's terrifying vision of Britain's future.

The public made Isaac Maynard their Prime Minister and in return, he infected them with a deadly contagion. Within hours, most of the population were dead. The contagion changed the few who did not immediately die into blood fuelled raging monsters.

A tiny percent found they were immune to the contagion's deadly caress. They thought they were the lucky ones – until the dead began to move.

The survivors have to contend with both the dead and the killers in order to stay alive, not aware that their greatest challenge will come when the zealot's acolytes emerge from their bunkers with gunships and assault rifles ready to claim their new Eden.

Oh, I loves me some Woodhead!! And who doesn't, the guy is a fantastic writer with many loyal fans and a huge library.

So, I've read a few things by this talented Yorkie Kook writer ~ hailing from the vacation destination worthy West Yorkshire ~ and one thing I have definitely noticed is that he is a VERY deep and VERY versatile writer. He effortlessly goes from extreme horror, to sci fi, to...dino's, to psychological thrillers, I think he's even working on a Indiana Jones type story now as well....so, action/adventure with maybe a little fantasy thrown it ~ who knows, it's Ian Woodhead and he's not pigeon holed, he can do it all and does do it all very entertainingly!!

Almost always, with everything I've read from him, Ian starts out his first chapter with lore and mythology ~ the building block/foundation of his intellectual stories ~ then switches to our main players and storyline.

This one starts out in the beautiful ~ yet creep inducing ~ U.K. countryside with a character named Isaac, a scripture leader of the Ministry of the Church. Sounds horrific already...
In a controlled setting him and his 'people' are conducting trials, of sorts. They are on a quest for rightful ascension, whatever the hell that means.....sounds ominous and selfish and just plain rude.

Then we get to our main players, Dominique and Monique, in two different storylines.
They broke up awhile ago ~ before all this end of days crap ~ but have had each other on each minds since this whole Armageddon thing happened and are bound and determined to find each other again....hopefully alive and not undead.

Dominique served in the military and is home now just trying to readjust, he was bitten by a friend right at the start of everything and had been passed out for the first few weeks of the outbreak...yet he did not turn infected ~ YAY for him!
He may just hold the key to cure if only there were any specialty scientists/surgeons still about?
Oh there must be, they'll find them, I have faith! :D
He is on a mission to first go home and find his dad ~ again, hopefully not all undead like~ but he must also battle his paranoid half crazed Rambo-esque neighbors. It's ok, he works out.

Monique has been holed up in an old church with a whole group of survivors, including a few kids....kids that have been forced to grow up far too soon but are still bratty kids at heart and play. Their missions mostly consist of keeping the peace within and field trip scouting for food.
She is a warm and nurturing character and I felt a lot of sympathy and fondness towards her.

This story flip flops back and forth with these characters and storylines, that really helped build the tension with all the cliffhangers Ian subjects you to, you seriously could not wait to get back to the other side, then the other side.

Ian writes character development really really well and his action scenes are fierce and energetic, I felt my heat rate climbing in parts.
That means I'm burning calories and can now consider reading as a cardio. Yep.

None of his characters are one dimensional, they all are multi layered and he maintains a good grasp of them throughout. His stories are always full of plot twists, bends, curves and swerves.

So yep, we're left with a brilliant setup for the next installment, there is far more going on here than just your standard zombie, there are dayrunners as well as night runners ~ umm different breedings of the same undead menace or...something more..... ~ terrorizing our friends, plus that mysterious Ministry place.....yea, they assert a bit of 'control' and pop up here and there to terrorize and infiltrate as well.
And these zombies seem to have a bit of intelligence and are turning more...community minded. Perhaps PTA or neighborhood watch is also in their undead non futures...EEECK!!!
I shudder that thought. Lol

SO stoked for the 2nd installment to find out just where the hell he is taking this very unique twist and take on the genre!! A zombie story with actual brains!! Refreshing, in a gut rotted road kill foul kind of way.
Bring on Part Duex!!
And hurry up with that, waiting is so so hard...uugh.. :D
