As Marcelle and her three friends vacation on the island of Trinidad with their oil geologist fathers in the decade after the second world war, they take a short boat trip with Jamison, a close and trusted friend. Caught in a storm, they are swept away from the coast of Trinidad and capsized on the Venezuelan coast. Not only are they short of food and water, but soon discover there are ruthless slavers trying to find them. When Lydia is taken by the slavers, Jamison and the three girls fight to rescue her. Jamison is a World War Two veteran and Marcelle has a lifelong passion for edged weapons. At the risk of their lives, they save Lydia from the slavers and this begins a cat-and-mouse game of survival. As the girls make friends with a native man and woman, they trek to a trading outpost to find supplies and barely escape with their lives. The trader has a young Indian girl as captive, and Marcelle takes the girl with them as they are pursued. As they fight to survive, Marcelle is nearly killed when they are ambushed by the slavers. Only their will to survive and stay together keeps them going. They decide to take the fight to the Portuguese village, where a fight to the death will determine their fate.
