Smartphone Movie Maker is actually a kit for kids ages 8-12.
The kit includes:
– A fully illustrated, hands-on director’s handbook
– A storyboarding book to sketch out a shot-by-shot breakdown of the film
– Card sheets to make a retro popcorn box
– Pre-printed tickets to invite family and friends to the film premiere
– Projector, to showcase final movie.
The booklet has less than 50 pages and is filled with information, that are easy to understand, and colorful illustrations by Victor Beuren. It shows step, by step how to plan, shoot, and edit movie.
Book is divided into three parts. Part 1. Before You Shoot. Part 2. Lights, Smartphone, Action. Part 3. Postproduction.
Part one explains what is necessary before the shoot. It talks about ideas, creativity, planning, researching, making a story board, auditions, scouting for location. (There is separate booklet for Storyboard making, included in the kit).
Second section talks about shooting, about light, camera angle, useful gadgets. There are a lot of great tips, even how to make an animation.
Last part teaches how to edit movie. It talks about adding music, special effects, use of green screen.
The booklet has a lot of vocabulary, that is usually used during movie shoots, so the child learns also a lot about movie making process. At the end of the booklet there is glossary and index of new words.
The booklet also includes instruction how to assemble projector and put together the pop corn box, that come with the kit.
The examples used in the booklet are clear and helpful in understanding the process of filming.
I was a little bit surprised though, that there are no resources for free softwares or editing applications. Most of the time, author just tells to look it up online. Since the kit is for kids, I would expect to share with them links to free, but good editing softwares.
It may seem a little bit overwhelming for some kids, but I am sure it would be a fun kit for any inspiring movie director out there. I think author did great job putting a lot of information into this small booklet, and explaining the process of filmmaking.

The Smartphone Movie Maker is an impressive piece of kit, not just a book. It comes complete with everything but a smartphone, to shoot your very own movie.
The outer of the box turns into a projector. Inside the box you will find two booklets and items to create popcorn holders and tickets for people to see your movie. There is also a lens.
The information booklet on how to make a movie is simplistic, colourful and gives you all the information that is required to plan, shoot and edit it. It is split into three sections.
Section one is all about the planning. From ideas and inspiration, to creating your own storyboard (the other booklet supplied), what costumes will be needed and assembling your crew.
The second section is about shooting your movie. Make sure you have your angles right and have the light in just the right place.
Lastly the third section is what to do once you have shot your movie. Here you will find all the answers to how to get special effects and how to edit.
I love the idea that a book can be more than just something to sit and read, that kids can have fun with it. If you have a budding movie star or director in your midst, then this book would be ideal for them.
There is a lot of planning and trial and error involved in making the movie, and if you have a child like mine, with an attention span of a goldfish, then this may not be the right book for them. My son was all excited about shooting a movie. He got to partway through part two of the book and decided that it was too much like hard work for him – well at least he was honest!
