A modern day Cinderella story? Well, almost. Joy Smith is on the run, sick and broke – with only nine cents to her name. When she’s rescued by marina owner, Fred Garrett, her life changes forever, so does his. You’ll have a love/hate relationship with Fred and discover a masterpiece within Joy.
Set in the quaint town of Eufaula, Alabama, The Gifts of Joy is a story of redemption, and the discovery of true love and self-worth. Throw in some country music, add good food and cooking, spiced up with a little romance, and some familiar characters from Helen’s ‘Coming Home’ novel, and you have a heartwarming story sure to make you laugh a little, and probably cry a lot as you take the journey with this modern day country fairy tale.
Y'all sit back and settle in a spell, as you will find yourself becoming deeply involved with each character in this enchanting story. Soon you come to appreciate their intricate personalities --for here in Eufaula, Alabama, on the shore of a sometimes stormy lake, you begin your journey into the lives of Fred Garrett and Joy Smith. If you have ever silently prayed to God to send "some peace, love, and joy" into your life,, then also remember the old Chinese admonishment to "Be careful what you pray for...you just might get it!" Watch out!!! Therefore be prepared as Helen takes you along a convoluted country path filled with so much 'downright fine' music and 'down-home' superb Southern cookin' that your heart and tummy both might burst. Helen's artistry, her gift of detailed narrative description, will draw you further into this hot & humid land, until you become completely immersed---not only in the charming setting, but in the love-hate relationship played out along the Chattahoochee River. It's not a fairy tale at all, honey...you know for sure...someday someone will walk into your life-----and oh, what a gift! Penny D. Laich
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I could really relate to Joy in several ways. I loved that Fred was freed from the demons of his past and able to allow himself to love.
