Dick Allan is a qualified doctor and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. After a long career in research for the Services he retired from his final post as Director of the Army Personnel Research Establishment at Farnborough. A lifelong sailor, he retired in 1995 and set off on a 28,000 mile voyage round the world aboard his yacht ‘Greylag’. After his round the world adventure, Dick wrote an account of the journey in his first book ‘Sailing My Dream’. In later years, Dick bought a narrowboat to explore the inland waterways of England and France. This led to his second book, The Cry of the Heron, a historical novel set around the building of the Basingstoke Canal. Dick has two grown-up children and lives with his wife, Janet, in Farnham, Surrey.

If you’re in the mood for a good sailing story give this book a pass. However if you’re the kind of reader that relishes every little detail of a voyage right down to drinks, dinner menu and onboard guests, then you will enjoy this very boring tale. The Skipper’s British personality shines through with each crew member that jumps ship.

What a dreadful booke

Badly written boring and the author is simply a whining narcissist. Do not waste your time and money. No sailing info and nothing but an arrogant cultural rant

Very informative

Oh dear, I really.wanted to.like this book. However, I just couldn't warm to Dick Allen. It's not badly written but for such.an interesting subject as circumnavigating the world, Dr Allen has somehow managed to make it stodgy and humourless, despite stuffing it with.information which I imagine would be useful to someone wishing to do the same.

I really enjoyed this book. I absolutely recommend it to everyone who things about sailing/navigating one day. He writes interesting details, thoughts and seems like a really nice person. His experiences are worth much more than any other 'theory' book. Don't hesitate to read it!

I did enjoy this book as a travelogue. Hearing about one persons circumnavigation and the places he visited made for a good read. I also found it good because it was pretty easy to put down, not really a gripping page turner if you know what I mean. Good though, and worth a read.
