Marc Ellis is a prophetic figure in the long tradition of Jewish activists who confront the conventional convictions of their fellow Jews with the hard truths of God's passion for justice and solidarity with the poor and oppressed. He strives, in this book, to revive the noble modern tradition of political dissent against Israeli state power represented by people like Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt, Martin Buber and others.
Marc H. Ellis is retired University Professor of Jewish Studies and Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at Baylor University. Among his publications are Encountering the Jewish Future (2012), Reading the Torah Out Loud (2007), Practicing Exile (2001), Oh, Jerusalem! (1999), and Unholy Alliance (1997), all from Fortress Press. He is also a regular contributor on Mondoweiss: The War of Ideas in the Middle East with a series called Exile and the Prophetic.
Oh boy oh boy nobody else has reviewed this yet.. and .. it's so good. Truth be told, I don't remember much about the quality of the prose, etc, but the intent of this book is what's so spot on and lovely and self-aware. When I was first trying to educate myself about the Israeli occupation, I came across this book and thought 'finally!'
