During a fateful weekend as he tries to make peace with his ghosts, Emmett crosses paths with Maude Mable, a lively beauty with secrets of her own. When Emmett and Maude discover Luther's hideous plan to wage war on a rival gang, the pair is thrust into a deadly match of wits and force. His back against the ropes, Emmett finds his quest for self-restoration has become a mission of survival-for him, Maude and everyone at the Hermann. Can Emmett Roane, a fighter who desperately seeks an elusive peace, halt the embodiment of evil while finding a way to heal his own heart and mind?

This book is set in the late nineteen twenties and E S Ready has managed to give it the feel of a cheap gangster novel written at that time.

Although the story-line is fairly simple it moves at a pace and is very easy to read. The initial action is set in a boxing ring and moves to an upmarket beach hotel where we are treated to lively descriptions of how people with money partied during Prohibition in the USA.

Interestingly the author mixes the perspective by writing Emmett’s story in the 1st person and the action away from him in the 3rd person. At first this was a little disconcerting but the 1st person sections helped to engender a strong atmosphere.

Most of the characters were stereotypical of the genre and apart from Emmett I found them fairly thin. Mabel seems a little too good to be true. She appears to have secrets of her own which I was waiting to discover but having completed the book I am none the wiser.

The final page suggests that Emmett Roane will return and why not? The character and the setting offer plenty of possible story lines and provided E S Ready can repeat the atmosphere and action there should be more good books to come.

I am pleased to give Until Someday four stars.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Well written story detailing one man's life after the death of his fiancée. Or so I thought.

Initially the book was very nostalgic regarding Emmett's feelings towards and main life events with Anna, and I didn't think I was going to get on with it due to the lack of plot and progression. However, the plot kicked in once Emmett met Maud and Luther and I was completely hooked!

The tone and dialogue fit the time period and the interactions between the characters was authentic. I was very pleased when I read the words "Emmett Roane will return" at the end.

The only disappointment and the reason for the loss of 1 star is the very slow start and how close I came to giving up (which I am very very very pleased I didn't).

Great Period Piece

This book was great reading before going to bed. It was light reading with no complex plots that that require a great deal of concentration. I liked that it was a period piece set in Newport, Rhode Island during prohibition. I look forward to the next Emmett Roane novel. Maude is still a mystery and I hope future novels will peel away layers so that we will get to know more a about her.

E.S. Ready has given us a good novel set in the year 1927, when mobsters tended to make the rules. The protagonist Emmett Roane, a professional boxer is seen fighting not just people but also his own demons. Haunted by the death of his love, Anna, he is seen talking to her a lot. These situations feature direct conversations which make us believe that Emmett is actually talking to Anna and in a way I assume he is. As he struggles to move past her death, while trying to divert his mind with alcohol, he goes to Newport for a few days to take a break. As fate has it, we are introduced to Maude, a sassy, forward lady who singles Emmett out and spends time with him.

In a slightly cliche manner, a romance develops between the two. However, the author does throw in some twists when we find out that a mobster, out for revenge is also staying at the same hotel. Pulled into the same plot, Emmett and Maude are forced to face their fears and help save innocent lives. Emmett, having fought in the Great War, and partly haunted by the horrors of then, but well trained is seen wielding the various guns that the mobster and his goons have.

The story is fast paced and set over a weekend. The plot flows well in-spite of some of the cliches and it makes for a good read. There is a good amount of action thrown in and each persons desires and fears are brought out. The plot features characters filled with hatred, lusting for revenge and death while others that want to move forward from their pasts and have a better life. As one can conclude, our protagonist cannot go somewhere and expect a quiet time! Trouble does seem to follow him around even if he isn't trying to seek it out.

The characters of the story are well developed and the story comes to life withe the author's vivid descriptions of the scenes, especially the ones that involve fighting. Everything is described as though under scrutiny of a microscope and each part is broken down to the very last bit. A good read, the author seems to have depicted the time in which the story is set pretty well. He paints a strong and vivid picture.

Until Someday, the title of the book resonates in the pages towards the end when Emmett makes peace with Anna's death and promises her, in his mind that they will meet again, someday! A worthy read!

Emmett Roane is a boxer from Brooklyn in the year 1927 who is trying to come to grips with the death of Anna, his deceased lover. Anna has been dead for some time and although Roane remains obsessed with her loss, the reader is not told how she died, or even that she is actually dead until later in the book. Nevertheless, it is to find relief from grief and obsession that drives Roane to Newport, Rhode Island to confront cherished memories in an effort to put his relationship with Anna behind him.

Much to his chagrin, and to his grudging delight, he meets Maude, a woman on the run from her own past, in the hotel in Newport. He also runs into Owen Topler, a cheating boxer, that he once fought who introduces him to Luther Irvin, a displaced bootlegging crime boss who is losing out to the Italian mob. Relations with Irvin are strained but cordial until Emmett and Maude witness an assassination carried out by one of Irvin’s men. Then all hell breaks loose in Newport.

Until someday is a convincing novel that both compels the reader to commiserate with Roane’s grief and simultaneously grit teeth and pray for him to get the hell on with his life. Fortunately, Maude is there to help him, and the developing situation with Luther Irvin and his gang provides enough action and distraction for Roane to temporarily remove Anna from his thoughts. Roane is nevertheless a fairly convincing character and is easy to cheer for. I found myself less willing to cheer for Maude at first until the book revealed more of her character and her own story. Irvin is purely evil; his gang possessed of the simple-minded stupidity with which many gangsters are credited. The book is well written and although a few typos were noted, they were not distracting.

I found Until Someday to be entertaining, even exciting and with a satisfying outcome. It should appeal to readers who love crime action, gangster or bootlegging stories, or stories in which a simple man gets caught in a situation not of his making and rises to become a hero.

Title – Until Someday
Author – E.S. Ready
Genre – Action/Adventure, Romance, Suspense, Crime
240 Amazon Pages
Rating 4 stars out of 5 Posted 10/9/16

Emmett Roane – 27 year old boxer 5'8" 173 lb. middle weight. Ex Army
Anna – Emmett's deceased girlfriend – died one yr. ago.
Maude Mabel – Emmett's new girlfriend he met in Newport R. I.
Luther Irvin – evil antagonist.

The story opens in 1927with Emmett getting beat to a pulp in a boxing ring by a bozo loser. Emmett's mind is on his dead girlfriend who died of pneumonia a year ago. Eventually he rises from the mat and dispatches the bozo. His career is on the skids, he drinks too much gin and is unpleasant to be around.
His friend and manager convinces Emmett to take time off and drive to Newport R.I. to relax and get his mind straight. In the Hermann Hotel's speakeasy he meets Maude Mable and suddenly has feelings he hadn't experienced since the love of his life, Anna, died. They hit it off and share several heart felt moments.
Emmett is a rough guy with a wise mouth. He quickly runs afoul of the local mobster, Luther Irvin and from there his weekend goes down hill with murder and mayhem.
The action is fast and furious, but Emmett is a match for the bad guys.
I enjoyed the book and look forward to more by E.S. Ready.

The editing is fair, too many missing and extra words. There are also several misspelled and wrong words.
Sentence structure is okay to good.
Character Development is okay to good.
Details are enough to carry the story, but not excessive.
The plot is fast paced and intense.
The writing style is crisp with a touch of noir.

This is a very well-written story set in the time of prohibition where mobsters tended to make the rules.

Emmett reminded me a lot of Rocky Balboa. He’s a boxer living past his prime, who’s taken some hard shots in the ring, and out. He lost the love of his life and never fully recovered. When his friend suggests that he take some time off and revisit his past in an effort to find peace with his future, Emmett reluctantly agrees.

Soon after arriving in Newport he’s thrust into the middle of a gang war and must decide whether to go up against the evil Luther Irvin or lose another woman that he’s come to care about.

The author stays true to his characters and provides the reader with a vivid picture of the local dialect and setting. This is one of those stories that would make a terrific movie!

I very much enjoyed this book and give Until Someday 5 lovely kisses

Great story of a hero during the 20s

The author uses a modern writing style to tell an amazing story about a broken hero that learns to be whole again.
