Previously read 'The League' and enjoyed it - I gave it five stars. This here book is a standalone and can be read with or without the companion book.
A genuine page turner - holds you interest to the end, I hope there are going to be more Post-human books and more from this author.

I loved the League and was thrilled when the author asked if I’d be interested in reading Deadfall, and even more so, when I found out it was a sort of prequel. One of the things I wanted more of after reading the League- was a focus on the team pre-breakup, the evolution of the team, or more of the team dynamics that we had a glimpse of in that story.

This is not quite any of that; in fact, you don’t need to know anything about that book. This is essentially an origin story for Cynthia aka/Deadfall. At first I was disappointed, because no “team” story, but after thinking about it, I was OK with it, especially if that means more origin stories about the others! A total win for me, in my opinion.

The spotlight in this is shone on Deadfall, and her partner. This story comes across as a straight-forward amateur detective, meets gifted-human mystery, but since I don’t like spoilers I will only say it changes into something a little darker and much more complicated.

With the rise of other post-humans absolutely Not using their gifts for the good (not that Cynthia is a pillar of virtue, since she is working for the local crime boss), Cynthia is introduced to the darker side of humanity and with it she learns to put to rest the ghosts of her own past.

This wasn’t the perfect book, there are things that need work; particularly to do with information relaying, and conclusion jumping between characters. But those things are balanced out with a strong group of characters, great actions scenes, and a clever story of finding yourself, and learning to be alright with who and what you are.

I enjoyed this quite a lot and am looking forward to more in this world.

*Love the minimal covers in this series.

Reading Kalamity Press books. Australian authors, characters and locations. Just published this week and I got to read it. It's a sequel of sorts to the League but you don't need to have read it to enjoy Cynthia's story. Deadfall is a stand alone. Like Bassett's earlier book it's got a lot to like about it - dynamic main character and a familiar storyline with unfamiliar elements (superpowers, intrigue). The Post-Human stories hold promise. Recommended.
