Sherritt Witches

A Distant Call

Rate this book
The Appalachian Mountains hold mysteries galore for the unwary and the full moon increases the danger. Jessie Corman is new to the area, a preacher determined to start a church.

Then he meets a beautiful young woman who catches fish with her bare hands and offers him a job and home-cooking. Jessie is soon warned about witches and the call which leads the hearer into the woods to disappear forever.

Anna May Sherritt and her granny know all about the call and how folks disappear. Can Anna save Jessie and solve the disappearances or is she part of the problem?

Prelude
The preacher stumbled through the trees, blind in the night. Only an occasional beam of moonlight managed to punch through the leaves and illuminate the old path. He tripped over an exposed root and fell once again, his hands and knees already skinned and bloody. It didn't matter. He got back to his feet, felt around the tree, and continued. All that mattered was the call.

It would be easier wandering a mountainside at night if he had a lantern. He thought maybe he'd started off carrying one, but dropped it somewhere and didn't bother to pick it back up. He didn't really need it. The call was a beacon, giving him all the direction he needed to follow.

He splashed through a small mountain stream. The thought of water caused him to briefly remember his parched throat. He didn't waste time stopping to drink. He was almost there.

When he staggered out of the trees into a clearing, the call finally stopped. He was there. He fell to his knees, sobbing with relief and no strength left to even get back to his feet. He looked around. The full moon showed a typical little clearing of tall grass, with a huge old oak tree in the center. There was not a bit of movement or sound in the night. The wood was holding its breath. Even the crickets had stopped their singing.

"I'm here," he gasped out. "I heard your call, and I came. You know I didn't have a choice. What do you want from me?"

"Play..." a quiet voice whispered from the night.
