Now a college student, Makenna Parker returns to Costa Rica for a new ecological adventure. As a volunteer at a wildlife preserve in Guanacaste, she finds unexpected romance that lands her right in the middle of a perilous scheme. Does her new boyfriend really have good intentions, and what are he and his stepfather really up to? Will Makenna discover the truth before it's too late?
i HATW THIS BOOK!!!!!! my stupid spanish teacher forced this damn noche de oro down my throat and i hated every single spanish word i read. the vocabulary is easy to understand but the plot is so horribly executed, jacques is my worst enemy. my spanish teacher whipped our butts for pronouncing jacques as jack-es and to this day the horrors of jack-ass and his stupid hacienda haunt me in my dreams, or should i say... nightmares?
p.s. the art is so fucking ugly it looks like astor pooped his pants and made abstract art out of it
I read this book before book 1, Robo en la noche. You can definitely read this as a stand alone and be fine. You might feel a little lost and Makenna meeting up with a past character isn’t quite as satisfying as when you read the books in order, but it isn’t essential to understanding anything. It’s more of like spying a secret handshake that you know 😉
I think older teens will identify with this book very well as the main character is in college, which is a nice change to some other readers. There were not as many cultural points in this book, and I am choosing to start with book 1 intentionally with my students because we just concluded a unit on Costa Rica and I really want to highlight that. I will do this novel with the same group of students next year; I do wish that I had done book 1 fall semester and this book spring semester. I will definitely make that change in the future!
There is some light romance and plot twists that teens will enjoy. The only drawback might be the characters and their relationships; if you are reading this independently, make sure to make a graphic organizer for the characters and write down what you know about them and their relationship to each other. If you start with book 2 without reading 1 first, you might feel like a few chapters aren’t really necessary to the story.
If you are teaching this in class, you shouldn’t have any problems guiding students through the organizing and relationships. 😊
It was really exciting and was a good page turner but a little hard to follow but that might just be cuz I’m not fluent. Also there were some plot holes lol but otherwise a good beginner Spanish book.
