"My Encounter with the Rebbe" is a first-hand account of a unique relationship Mr. Zalmon and Roselyn Jaffe had with the Lubavitcher Rebbe (and his Rebbetzin). This is not just "another" book about the Rebbe. These events were all recorded as they unfolded from 1958 through 1994. To read "My Encounter with the Rebbe," is to a gain a true glimpse into the experience of being in the Rebbe's presence spanning some 35 years.
I enjoyed this book on a couple of different levels. The first level is just enjoying what it was like for Reb Zalman Jaffe to see the Rebbe so many times and the second level was to read how to be a chossid. Reb Zalman discusses a lot how he tried to make the Rebbe simchadik. He'd start singing a niggun and so on and his focus was to be a chossid of the Rebbe and to bring the Rebbe simcha. So often, I'm caught up in writing to the ohel to get brachas because I need this or I need that and Reb Zalman was saying in his diaries, that the focus should be different.
The pictures are wonderful although some of the pictures of the Rebbe made me feel an almost Vermeeresque feeling that I was looking at something private which perhaps maybe I shouldn't be looking at... there are pictures of the Rebbe in his study and so on, pictures which seem perhaps a little too private for me to be looking at.
Overall, however, I loved this book, especially for the second level.
