I Did My Homework in My Head:

Rate this book
Based on the hit Instagram @LivefromSnackTime, here are irresistible quotes from the elementary school classroom that prove kids really do say the darndest things--and even more so when their parents aren't around.

NYC school teacher Alyssa Cowit was so surprised by the funny things her students would say that she started an Instagram account to chronicle them. From friends, siblings, and pets to lying, love, and homework, the wisdom and witticisms on Live from Snack Time have been picked up by Today , Huffington Post , Good Housekeeping , Buzzfeed , and more. Now, Cowit collects her favorites plus never-before-seen ones in a sweet gift that celebrates the innocent (and sometimes not-so-innocent) revelations of children.

This tiny, funny book took just 20 minutes to read, but will have me chuckling for days, as I recall these uniquely humorous sayings of kiddos. This originated as a blog by a teacher (@LiveFromSnackTime, on Instagram), then evolved into this minuscule volume.

I'm not usually a reader of "books of sayings" or quotes, but as a (semi) retired teacher, the cover and title of this little tome pulled me in. Organized into brief sections... "Excuses," "Growing up," "Love," "Mysteries," "Celebrations," "Bestie," "Family," Feelings," and "Conclusions." Parents, grandparents, and just about anyone who thinks kids are a riot, are likely to laugh out loud at some of the wackiness, such as:

"I want to be a teacher, but my first name isn't 'Mrs.'"

"All the teeth in my mouth are now adults."

"When you love someone, you marry them so you don't have to give them back to their parents."

"Why are wishes made of pennies?"

and

"When these rocks turn into diamonds, I'll be rich."

That last one could easily have been uttered by my son, who was notorious at the ages of 3-5 for filling every pocket with rocks, everywhere we went. He felt that they were very valuable. (On one notable occasion, he ran out of pockets, and began stuffing rocks into his socks...)

Five stars for the true authors of these whimsical and wonderful utterances: the children. Five stars as well, for the adult collaborators who treated me to some much-needed laughter tonight.

As a former teacher, I can attest to some of the great and hilarious things children will say.... and there were so many great ones in this book, when thinking about the review and which ones I wanted to share, it ended up being nearly the entire book.

So with that, just read this little book. It is a fast, easy read and it is hilarious and will keep you laughing!

This cute little book has what it says: wacky things kids say. I forgot how I discovered the original social media account, but I followed when the Instagram posts were done with fictional stock children saying these kid things. If you're familiar with their social media, this will not surprise.

Roughing arranged by some themes (holidays, family, etc.), each page has one comment by a child, some of which you'll recognize from the accounts. Unlike the social media, though, these are totally anonymous (meaning, no identifying information at all for the children, no credit, etc.). This is not that different from the social media, where sometimes the child is anonymous and the contributor is anonymous, etc.

That is it. It is a cute little book with just these sayings and little else beyond very basic information. No commentary, no history of how the account came to be, etc. There is some criticism that it is US-centric, which is fair, although I do think some of these are probably genuinely universal.

I would say that this is probably a pretty specific audience for humor and I do not know if it is something one would want to keep in their library. I was happy to buy this to support the people behind the account but not everyone would want to invest their money here and skimming at the library/bookstore might be the preferred way of consuming the book.

I enjoyed it, was happy to buy it and will continue to follow their social media.

A thoroughly amusing glimpse of the way some children’s minds work. It is obviously American which is fine by me but I can understand it may be distracting for some. Hardly a long read. Maybe more of a “bathroom” book?
