When I received an email asking if I would be interested in reviewing the Bible Workbook Series by Catherine B. Walker, I replied with an ecstatic, "Yes!" What I didn't know at the time is that these resources were actually written in 1943-44 which, to me, makes them more. In current conservative evangelical circles, there often seems to be a stigma toward women attending seminary and I imagine it was even greater during the time Catherine wrote these workbooks. I was impressed to learn that Catherine possessed a Doctor of Religious Education degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. For the sake of this review, I researched who Catherine was and found out via her biography that she lived to be 100. From what I learned about her, her love for Jesus, and her love for people, it is patent that she ran long and hard for the Lord and I hope to emulate her in that. Although Catherine is no longer living, it is so sweet to her legacy live on in many ways, including the publication of these Bible Workbooks! Catherine took The Great Commission seriously and these workbooks are evidence of that. The Bible Workbook Volume 1 Old Testament was intended to be a high school course but is a helpful tool for anyone desiring to grow in their knowledge of the Old Testament. Since I have read the Bible chronologically, it was exciting to see that the workbook examines the Old Testament in the same way. Before diving into the Old Testament, this workbook begins with a brief overview of the entire Bible which creates a helpful foundation for the entire study. The questions are simple and I love that they point readers to the Bible. One fun aspect of this book is the maps which have a vintage look. The Bible Workbook Volume 2 new Testament is composed in the same format as the Volume 1 Workbook. I love that this volume contains a page explaining the Intertestamental Period and contains an outline of the life of Christ. On page 5, Catherine explained, "Christ is the theme and central character fo the Old Testament as well as the New Testament. The Old Testament continually promises 'Christ will come.' The New Testament says 'Christ has come.'" I really enjoyed reading this simple explanation emphasizing the importance of why we need to know all of Scripture. The Bible Workbook Series Volume 1 and 2 complement each other really well. Both workbooks contain 3 holes in the spine making them an easy addition to a binder. The pages in both workbooks are also perforated making them easy to submit as assignments to be graded. I'm really thankful for these workbooks and for Catherine's heart to help people know who God is according His word. These workbooks help readers understand the Bible comprehensively but in a simple way and they are affordable. I highly recommend these workbooks to anyone who is looking to grow in their knowledge of the Bible. I received the Bible Workbook Series compliments of Moody Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

Helping you teach and understand what matters most!

If you're looking to advance your Bible study to a more serious, systematic approach, then these two affordable workbooks are just what you need.

I love study books and getting to know a subject better -- and I especially love new opportunities to learn something new about the Bible. I thought they would be a perfect addition to our homeschool.

But when they arrived, I was disappointed, because I quickly realized that the material seemed fairly dry and straightforward and most likely not something I could introduce to my daughter, at her age.

I'm now debating whether I'd like to go ahead and complete the workbooks now myself, or wait and do them together with my daughter when she gets older.

However, once I started really examining the pages (and not just flipping through them), I could see that the goal of these workbooks is not to provide a comprehensive study of the entire Bible, but merely to build a good foundation of background knowledge which the student can use to build upon with further study.

Turns out, these workbooks were originally published in the early 1940s, which explains the simplicity of the material a bit. But the content is timeless, and the questions are posed in such a clear manner that it's pretty refreshing in this day of distractions.

So, even though I'm disappointed in them, it's not due to anything being wrong with the books themselves, just that I wish they were better suited for where we are in our homeschool journey today.

I either just need to be patient and use them later, or take their inspiration and create something useful for us for now.

With all that being said, I would not recommend these workbooks for early homeschool use. They seem to be potentially helpful for high schoolers, but since I'm not working with that age right now, I'm not sure of their appeal at that age, either.

I would recommend these workbooks for adults -- especially those who don't want a lot of fluff, but are looking for clear, straightforward questions to research and consider in order to better build background knowledge of the Bible.

If you like lists and working through projects in a systematic manner, then these books are right up your alley.

Each workbook includes detailed maps, helpful exercises, and thousands of questions. There's an introduction and overview of the Bible as a whole, overviews of the main books of both testaments, author backgrounds, literary themes, timing information, key texts, and outlines. The material is also presented in chronological order, which makes it helpful for historical orientation.

These books are indispensable tools for anyone wanting to take their study of the Bible seriously. They are comprehensive, but not overwhelming, and sure to enrich your study at home or with a group at church.

I received a free copy of this product from Moody Publishers in exchange for writing a review. All opinions are my own.

I was truly thrilled to receive these two bible workbooks by Catherine B. Walker. There are two volumes, one is the Old Testament and one is the New Testament. I want to start with a disclaimer: I have not completed the entirety of these workbooks at this time but I am looking forward to that in the very near future!

First, these workbooks can easily fit into a binder which I think is great. The pages are perforated so you can tear them out or put the workbook itself directly into a binder. That will make these easy to transport if needed.

I also love the way the workbooks are designed. They go in order of each testament and are written to allow you space to answer questions, fill in blanks, etc. Through my perusing, I can already tell that there is going to be some major depth of knowledge exposed through these little books.

Catherine Walker stated regarding these books: “It is my prayer that all who use these books will be guided by them into a deeper, more personal, knowledge of the living Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, as well as the written Word, the Bible,”

Catherine designed these books to encourage students to want to know more. These are not exhaustive studies but a way to help us understand how and why the Bible is written and get our thoughts moving in the right direction.

As we prepare to homeschool beginning within the next week, I foresee these being helpful for me as I learn how to teach the boys about the Bible in a practical way.

Thank you, SideDoor Communications and Moody Publishers for these great resources!

I enjoyed these workbooks so much! They are so well thought out and are really enjoyable as you go through them and fill in the answers. I really liked that they give you a clear understanding of the Bible when you're done.

These are not intended to be an exhaustive Bible study but to encourage you to read the Bible in a deeper way on your own. These workbooks do exactly that - they make you want to dig deeper into Scripture to understand God's Word.

These workbooks would be great for a new Christian, however, even as a life-long Christian, I learned things and felt that it enhanced my understanding of the Bible. These would be great workbooks for a small study group!

These studies are punched for a 3 ring binder and the pages are perforated so you can put them in a notebook and lay the pages flat, if you'd like. You could add notebook paper to your binder for taking additional notes, as well.

I really love these workbooks and high recommend them! I give them 5 stars.

*I received these workbooks from Side Door Communications. I received a copy of this book to review but I was not financially compensated in any way. The opinions expressed are my own and are based on my observations while reading this book.

In this first volume, the author begins by showing some generalities of the Bible, such as the unity, the translations, the literary genres and the main divisions of the Scriptures.

Then, it begins to show us a general structure of each book of the Old Testament, which consists of the name, the author and other very interesting data. The reader will find that the structure of each book of Scripture contains a series of questions to deepen further in the reading of the Scriptures.

An interesting detail in this volume is that the author makes a connection between the Old and New Testaments, allowing the reader to have a clearer picture about the Scriptures.

This book will be very useful for every student of the Scriptures, since it is written in a simple way, allowing the assimilation of the content to be more accessible.

It is no secret that the Old Testament is not that easy to understand. The texts are ancient. The contexts are drastically different than our world. The cultures are too hard to comprehend. Enter this classic workbook for anyone who wants to walk through the Old Testament. Written originally for High School Bible classes, this work has been revised several times. Due to its popularity, it has been republished once again for a new generation.

There are notes to the teacher to help instructors optimize the use of the book. Using a chronological approach, the purpose of the book is a broad overview of the general themes of the Old Testament. Walker begins with twelve convictions about the Bible. This helps us appreciate that even though the workbook summarizes the broad themes of the Bible, we must always be aware that there are much more than what this workbook can cover. These include:

What the Bible says about itself;
General outline of Hebrew History;
Types of Literature;
Manuscripts description;
Famous Bible translations;
Dates, Authorship, etc.

The book can also be used for adult Bible Classes using the four units of twelve lessons each. The lesson numbers are difficult to read but the flow is chronological. Perhaps, instead of studying the book in separate forms, readers will flow along from one section to another without the need for subdivisions. The blank lines would prompt readers and students to refer frequently to the Bible for answers. There are Bible verses to memorize; questions to trigger our memories of what we know; memory keys; acronyms; interesting facts; even games about the Bible to maintain any student's level of interest. All in all, it is a fascinating overview of the Old Testament to help us get a better grasp of the big story of the Bible.

My Thoughts
It takes a little while to get used to the format of the book. I was initially expecting clearly marked Old Testament Bible books as chapter headings or genre headings as a guide for study. However, Walker uses her own demarcations; namely the sections: 1) Introduction; 2) Exodus; 3) United & Divided Kingdom; and 4) The Divided Kingdom. It does not cover all the 66 books of the Old Testament. The teacher should be bold to try different ways to use this book. One need not follow exactly the schema proposed. Use this book in conjunction with the Bible as the guide. Some of the parts would require updating, such as the section on translations. Since the year 2000, there has been many more translations. For a brief book, I still think this book has a lot of potential.

In summary, I enjoyed reading through and being challenged by the questions posed by the author. The way to truly learn is to work through the various questions and use the Bible frequently. If there is one key strength in this book, it is exactly the latter.
