This is not a Regency. But what if you woke after a traumatic experience and believed you were in 1813 England?
A young woman suddenly awakens after a terrible vehicle accident, convinced she’s betrothed to a lesser British baron 200 years ago. But instead of a baron, she encounters a man named Earl… and this low-key, 2013 Tennessee farm isn’t anywhere near England.
For several reasons, the lonely, isolated, handsome Dusty Earl wants to help the delusional woman (whom he calls the “duchess”) he rescued from the burning car, but she sees everything around her through a lens that’s two centuries old.
Though beginning with fear and mistrust, in their following days together, they develop a truce. But can their truce become a relationship?
Meanwhile, Dusty’s desperate enemy intends to use the confused, attractive patient to his own multiple advantages — and Dathan always fights dirty. How far will Verdeville’s bad boy go to get what he wants? How long will the woman (who thinks her name is Georgette Heyer) continue to believe she’s living in Regency times?
The Duchess of Earl is a hybrid of contemporary, suspense, and action (with components of comedy). It’s also an affectionate wink at Regencies and Regency readers.

This is not my usual type of book. It is a page turner trying to figure out what will happen next. Loved it.
A nice clean romance like the old days. I really liked there was no explicit sex scenes and no language. Although Mr Earl had a temper and used a few imaginative words to show is displeasure. . This is perfect for the YA or teen set.
I loved the setting, in eastern small Tennessee town on a small farm with a recluse (Mr Earl)
JL Salter has a wonderful way to bring the landscape alive withouth overdoing it. The characters are like real life. I wanted to strangle the bad guy while rooting for the good guys.
I really love J.L. Salter's style of writing and he doesn't disappoint with The Duchess of Earl. I liked this book because it kept you guessing and on the edge of your set wondering what was going to happen to the Duchess and Earl. How their two worlds could eventually come together and would their budding romance survive when it does. This book has bad guys with guns and evil people who want what Earl has including the Duchess. I loved it.
Not one of my favorites, I just couldn't get into the storyline. I ended up not finishing the book after several attempts to stay interested in the story.
I love this author. This isn't my usual type of book but since I've loved or really really liked his other books I gave it a go and I'm glad I did. Truly enjoyed it all the way through to the end. Another book I wished I hadn't read so fast.
As with all of J.L. Salter’s books, I am always left with a “feel good” feeling inside. They are light, entertaining and fun stories to read. The Duchess of Earl was no exception! I absolutely loved this story and found myself laughing out loud all the way through it. The story was exceptionally well written and all of the characters are a hoot a minute! From the very beginning you are brought into the confused mind of “Georgette Heyer” who was involved in a car accident and who thinks she is in jolly ol’ England in the countryside and that is where the fun begins too! Don’t miss this one if you love a good story that will have you laughing and help you escape the real world for a while!
Loved this book and the fact that it's a contemporary romance but you still get that historical aspect since the main character thinks she's from that time. Great idea merging the two. Would definitely recommend this book!
