A Little Book of Lost Loves

Rate this book
A professional co-respondent with a side line in blackmail, a shallow coquette, a naval officer, a maid ... love strikes the least likely subjects, and makes idols even of the unworthy, but the loss of the least worthy lover can be an enduring sorrow. Eleven little tales of loves lost, loves mourned ... and just possibly loves redeemed.

Alex Brightsmith was born and raised in Bedfordshire and defies anyone who was not to point it out on a map. Bedfordshire has been claimed (or rejected) by at least five bordering regions, and its lasting legacies have been a resistance to categorisation and a fondness for sprouts.*

Alex reads indiscriminately and loves, as a bare sampling, Charteris, Chandler, Chesterton, Christie & la Carre.

Alex currently lives in Birmingham, commutes reluctantly, gardens and bakes erratically, and writes thrillers, fantasy and flash fiction.

Alex's two published novels, Viennese Waltz and Find the Lady, are thrillers featuring the pickpocket, cat burglar, and potential government employee Kathryn Blake.

*You’ll know you’re in Bedfordshire when you can smell the sprouts; you’ll know your companion is a local if they can’t.

Eleven almost micro-mini reads of love and loss, beautifully and exquisitely crafted by the very talented Alex Brightsmith. Many of these little treasures came about from Flash Fiction prompts.

I was given this beautiful little book along with a pretty origami puppy (created from a sheet of paper containing yet another mini story) at the recent UK Indie Lit Fest in Bradford UK.

I started reading this as some light bedtime reading and thought it might be a week of short stories to digest before I drifted off to sleep. I went from one story to the next without stopping. These are lovely tales that are beautifully crafted and give a glimpse into the lives of the different characters that they contain.

Writing flash fiction is much harder than most people think and Alex Brightsmith is a master of this particular art form. I highly recommend this lovely little book, especially for those who really struggle to find time to sit down and read through longer novels because of time constraints.

This is a tiny book, barely more than a pamphlet, and all of these stories are available online, but sometimes it's nice to have something to hold in your hand.

These are stories that surprised me when I wrote them, stories about love (but not necessarily romantic love), often bestowed by unlikely people on unworthy objects.
