I'm planning a trip to Northern California and Oregon with my brother and I spent the morning reviewing travel guides at Borders. I spent a solid hour with this book and concluded that it was not worth the $20 or extra weight lugging it around during our travels. Here's why:

(1) It's outdated. The most recent edition was published in 2004, making the prices and websites (and possibly phone numbers) suspect.

(2) Besides a nice map in the beginning of the book, there are few to no other maps. When flipping through sections--San Francisco Bay Area to Sonoma, for instance--it would've been nice to have a map of the entire region and the selected area within it to help me orientate myself.

(3) The websites it does list are few and far between, not to mention potentially outdated. I felt like I'd have to google everything and print out an addendum to the guidebook, which defeats the purpose.

(4) Just plain unaccessible. I felt like the book did a bad job introducing me to the different areas and that the information it did provide was unorganized. After reading it for an hour I felt like I had lots of ideas about things to do but no real sense of how the trip would look or where to go when or what route to take.

Compared to other books on Northern California, like Fodor's and Lonely Planet, this book can't compete.
