Running Hot

Rate this book
Kurt Trench loves running a successful auto repair shop with his twin sister Lena. Lately loyal customer Shane Dolan has been coming around more often, and Kurt assumes it’s because of his sister. While Kurt wouldn’t dream of coming between them, he can’t help being drawn to Shane himself…. Or thinking about him in ways he definitely shouldn’t.

One night everything changes. Kurt doesn’t reciprocate Shane’s kiss—he’s got no intention of stealing his sister’s man—but when he tells Lena what happened, she can’t believe how thick her brother is. She’s not the reason Shane’s been coming around the garage, and Kurt and Shane have more in common than a love of classic muscle cars. Now it’s on Kurt to make the next move, assuming he hasn’t blown his chance for good.

This short 50-page story was fine, kind of cute, but I probably won't remember much about it in a few days.

The blurb pretty much details out everything that's going to happen.

Guy thinks boy is hot.

Guy thinks boy is pseudo-dating his sister (or on his way there.)

Guy beats himself up (repeatedly) for being attracted to boy.

The end.

So it's about 3 stars cute and was low-key fun, but isn't going to cure cancer.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because still no 1/2 stars here on GR and come on muscle cars rock and there's a Barracuda involved here.

Mmmmmm....muscle cars and men!

Kurt may know his cars but he definitely needs to fine tune his senses when it comes to men. Kurt and his twin sister Lena run a successful auto repair shop and that may even be why Sloan started bringing his cars there to be repaired but it's not what's kept him coming back.

Sloan may love his muscle cars but what's got his motor racing is the sexy mechanic who owns the garage. Problem is said mechanic thinks it's his twin sister that Sloan's after and much as he'd like to take Sloan for a test drive he doesn't poach especially from family. So for Kurt, Sloan is strictly off limits.

It takes a wake up call from his sister after he tells her about Sloan kissing him to make Kurt realize that opportunity knocked and he may just have slammed the door in it's face. Thankfully Kurt knows how to find his way back to that door and he's more than willing to knock and see if the door's been locked or if he can manage to re-open it for a second chance at the man who starts his motor running.

My favorite part of this story was the cars, especially the 1970 Barracuda that Sloan wanted to restore. Don't get me wrong I liked Kurt and Sloan and they made a cute pairing but growing up with 4 brothers one of whom ended up being an auto mechanic and all of whom shared a passion for cars, there was frequently more than one muscle car parked in our yard and ironically my favorite was my oldest brother's Barracuda. So this turned into an enjoyable trip down memory lane for me.

'Running Hot' was a short story about two men with a common attraction to cars and an even stronger attraction to each other add in some steamy sex and a side helping of car nostalgia and it all made for one sweet read.

The blurb gives the entire story away, so I'm not sure what was the point of reading it. I actually had to go back and skim it because it's completely forgettable. Typical miscommunication trope which I abhor big time. Ugh! It amazes me at how much adults don't think or talk. I can never understand why it takes a third party person to tell you where you messed up at. This was a short story. 50 pages, and 30 of the pages were them walking around in circles around one another. **Gag**. I mean if you are going to give us this short length, then place up the price. I wanted the situation to be handled sooner so we can get to see them at least spend time together. With this length, the story really didn't do anything for me. I didn't care for Shane or Kurt. Sure, I can see the attraction between the two, but it took entirely too long for me.

The blurb of this novella pretty much gives away the whole story. There is a huge misunderstanding between Kurt and Shane, which results in them circling around each other for months without expressing their true feelings. The pining away part with Kurt thinking Shane as his sister’s potential boyfriend was stupid. Kurt had the worst gaydar ever. He never guessed that Shane might actually be interested in him and not his sister with all the time he spent in Kurt’s garage. And it does not take years for a girl to decide a “single and hot” guy is going to be her boyfriend so Kurt is pretty dumb in not figuring out Shane’s attraction to him sooner.

It is a novella so it’s pretty short and almost 90% of the book the characters are running circles around each other without going anywhere so I was a little bored. It was an OK read but it could have been better.

3.5 stars...

Cute short story, and yes, predictable, but still very much enjoyable. Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, but it features muscle cars and hot mechanic, and if that doesn't deserve rounding up...I don't know what does. I'm superficial like that.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Overall, this story was formulaic, predictable, and ultimately will be forgettable.

Kurt and his sister are said to be close, but certain topics are off limits. Shane is a customer that starts coming around more often and Kurt incorrectly assumes that Shane is interested in Lena. So naturally that makes Shane off limits for Kurt, only Shane is gay. All we see is Kurt saying that he is attracted to Shane, but any attraction stays firmly on the page. When Shane visits the auto shop, he does spend time talking to Lena and gives Kurt no indication that he is interested. A year goes by. An entire year and Kurt can’t ask Lena if she is dating Shane, Lena can’t give Kurt a clue, and Shane makes almost no indication that he is interested.

So there is attraction that is stated but not conveyed off the page and there is no communication, followed by a misunderstanding that could have been resolved on page one. Then of course Kurt has to go get his man and the story read as if it was following a template and was flat without originality or emotion. There are better short stories out there and there are also worse ones, and this was just a basic story with some classic cars thrown in for good measure.

Formulaic. Forgettable. And that blurb is basically the whole story...

Considering that Kurt spent months (or about 2/3 of this short story) thinking that Shane was dating her sister (IMHO, he could easily remedy that situation simply by, oh I don't know, making some sort of comments to his sister at least, to confirm Shane's status) ... I was lucky that this one was short. Or I would be heavily annoyed on the lack of communication.

I usually like miscommunication/misunderstanding story, but this one was blah. Too little interaction between the MC and his love interest, and I couldn't feel the delicious pining.

Very good, quick read. I love me an oblivious kind of guy like Kurt and Shane reads like a doll. I wish there was more time of them talking to each other than Kurt and his sister, Lena, though. I can understand him wanting to keep his relationship with her all good, considering they're twins, business partners and co-workers, but after her pointing out his stupidity in not realizing that he was the sibling Shane wanted, I wish the story had focused just on Kurt and Shane until the end. It was cute and I really like the dynamics between all three characters, but I wanted more romance. And honestly some carsex outside of Kurt's fantasies once he realized he could actually be with Shane.

First thing I want to say is this book was a super sweet romance that I really thought was very good!

We have Kurt who co-owns the family garage with his sister who all along has a crush on Shane who he thinks is dating his sister. He is completely clueless to why Shane is really there until Shane makes it clear one night out but Kurt still doesn’t get it and pushes him away. I truly thought the author was able to make Kurt's clueless nature so believable that you never question WHY. Because you can see absolutely why.

This story was perfectly made for a short story that it is because although we do believe Kurt doesn’t see what is in front of his face there was no way you could go 100 pages doing that without it drawing on too long. That being said I think for a short story it was very well developed and the characters were fleshed out. Do I wish we could have had little more cute lovey stuff which I think, for me, is because Kurt portrays this tough guy on the outside but inside he is just a big mushy (HOT) guy. One thing also is it is a HFN...basically. It ends after the just started dating which isn’t bad but one of two things would make it better...an epilogue or a second book about them.

One negative about the story...the blurb. I’m not sure how the blurbs get checked but someone should change it to have less of the story in it because it basically gives the whole thing away before the reader gets the chance to even read these characters.

I will be looking from more from this author in the future!

Kurt Trench loved his twin sister Lena and there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for her, including staying away from a man he thought was interested in her. Together they ran the family owned auto repair shop, a place that had become second home to Shane Dolan. For Kurt, Shane was a knockout, charming, and easy on the eyes, exactly Kurt's type. And for Shane, Kurt was a dream he wanted to make a reality. They shared the same passion for muscle cars. Shane did everything to show Kurt his true feeling, even keeping the man in business, but to no avail. It took one kiss for Kurt react, and only to reject Shane. When Lena got the whole story, she quickly informed Kurt that Shane was interested in him. It would take a lot of grovelling on Kurt's part to win Shane over.

Quick, Sexy and Easy Read!

Kurt Trench and his twin sister own and operate a garage passed down from their father. For the past few months Shane Dolan has been coming around the shop with various needs on his Mustang. It's obvious to Kurt that Shane and Lena are somehow involved. Shane seems to follow her around like a puppy and unlike her usual self Lena seems to eat it up. The problem however is that Kurt can't help but be attracted to Shane and he doesn't want to upset his sister by going after her man. When Shane kisses Kurt outside of a pub, Kurt resists his advances not liking the fact that his sister's boyfriend would betray her like that.

If only Kurt were to have spoken with Lena about Shane or even watched Shane more closely, maybe he would've realized Shane has wanted him this whole time. Now Kurt will have to figure out how to apologize to Shane and hope he still has a chance.

This was a cute and sexy pick me up. I liked the story of a brother having a crush on his sister's boyfriend only to find out the boyfriend had a crush on him, too. Kurt and Shane were a good match for one another and it was good they finally figured things out.

Since this is so short there really wasn't much angst yet there was definitely a good build-up of sexual tension. It was funny, too, which completed the whole thing. Yes, I'd recommend Running Hot!

I love, love, love the idea of this book. No matter how much you want someone, you put that need aside because someone you love has feelings for them, or atleast you think they do. This story is a simple case of misunderstanding and miscommunication.

Kurt and Lena are brother and sister, twins actually. Together they run their father's garage. Shane has been coming around lately, always with legitimate car issues but recently he's been pretty chummy with Lena. Kurt assumes Lena has feelings for Shane since she has never let any man hang around that much.

The more Shane hangs around the garage, the more Kurt realizes how attractive he is and how much they have in common. Kurt tries to push the feelings away, he would never come between his sister and any man.

Kurt and Shane start spending more and more time together as Shane restores an old car he bought. Shane, thinking that Kurt might have feelings for him kisses him at the bar one night. When Kurt doesn't reciprocate Shane runs away embarrassed. When Lena gives Kurt the cold shoulder he realizes he needs to figure out what's going on quick so he can fix it.

Great story. I love characters with integrity. Someone that still has morals and ethics. It's a sexy attribute of any person.

This story was 90% plot and 10% sex and it totally worked. I was interested from start to finish.

I liked this story, it was a nice to read, but it also was so frustrating. The part that make a little hard this reading for me, was that there was no mystery on it. I think the blurb gave too much away and from the moment I started, I knew where the story would go.

Kurt was such an oblivious and frustrating character. He wasn’t unlikable, just the contraire, he was very nice, perhaps too nice. He seemed to be completely unaware of Shane’s advances. It was very nice to see his internal struggle. Trying to choose between his desires and doing the right thing, I really enjoyed that part.

There wasn’t too much character development, at least on Shane’s case. I felt like I didn’t get to know him well. But it didn’t make the story less pleasant. It was a fun book to read, no angst here, just fun with boys and cars.

Kurt and Shane’s relationship was nice. It wouldn’t hurt to have more romance and I felt like they had little time as a couple. But the time they did have together was good. In general I felt like it was a nice book. I think reader looking for a short and fun story would enjoy this one.

MAJOR PINING. SO MUCH FLUFF.

This book was a quick, delightful read so this review is going to be short and sweet. In the book there was a lot of pining (seemingly one sided) until Shane kisses Kurt and Kurt blows a fuse (PUN INTENDED).

Despite the shortness of the book (50 pages!) it was as fulfilling as a good full length book. I feel like I got to know the three main characters: Lena, Kurt, and Shane; as well as develop a fondness for them. It made it easy to be Team!Kurt+Shane because Kleinn developed the characters and showed their affection for each other very clearly.

There is some angst and pining but no major drama and a happy ending so if you are into fluff and happy romances then this book is for you.

I personally would read more if the author made this into a series. I’d love to read more about Shane and Kurt or new characters from the shop. The only downer was the length of the book but I feel like the quality more than made up for that.

M/M Romance
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

This was a sweet short look in to the lives of Kurt, Lena and Shane. I would not consider this really a story - it was more of a glimpse in to something that would make a much larger story.

That being said, I did enjoy the quick snapshot. Lena was amazing - she's funny, snarky, pushy, loving and all the things that a twin sister should be. She loves Kurt and wants to see him happy.

Then you have Kurt - he's kind of the stereotypical guy in that he's oblivious to a lot of hints. He doesn't want to step on toes, but can't help his attraction to Shane.

It's actually fairly sweet how Kurt tries to protect Lena. It's how a brother and sister should look out for each other.

When all is said and done, the attraction is so much, both are overcome. However, the communication among the characters is poor and only Lena can help clear it all up. It was sweet, hot, funny and definitely left the reader wanting to know more about this awesome garage family.

Fast novella, spread out over months of courtship. Is this in a nutshell.

We’ve a three way non sexual, because guys once again won’t talk about there feelings.

Kurt and his sister Lena run an auto shop. Lena has a friend Shane, Shane has been stopping by the shop a lot lately and Kurt takes that to mean he’s interested in Lena. All the while, Kurt want’s to jump him (sexually) But because these three are the worst communicator ever, months go by and nothing happens except Shane and Kurt get more and more frustrated.

You know when you see potential and you want to feel that connection with ppl because you know it will be amazing. That is these two. But to me, we spent to much time avoiding each other and then the last 10 pages or so making it up The whole lead up was spoiled. I wanted these two to find each other, to have the tug of course, but for us to enjoy a courtship as well, and we didn’t.

When we did get together, it was great, the banter, the frustrated chemistry. It all worked.

From the blurb, you can see the (almost) entirety of this short story. What it doesn’t say is that Shane comes around the garage for months and that at no point does Kurt ever ask Lena if the two are going out (she and Shane) even though they are twins who work together every day.

So… you have to have a big block of salt to accept the fact that Kurt lusts after Shane but only suspects that he’s his sister’s boyfriend.

The writing – otherwise- is good. It’s 50 pages and reads very quickly. The dialog is funny and when the smexy times come- oooo la la!

I wish this had been a bit more angsty. Some more significant reason for the two MC to be dancing around one another, it would have taken this from a good read to a great one.

I did enjoy it, and if you’re in the mood for a low angst, quick (yet hot!) read, give this one a go. It ends on a HFN (it’s short!) but it seems very promising. I’d absolutely read something by this author in the future.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:
This was a nice short story. Kurt is completely clueless in Shane’s attraction to him and tries as hard as he can to keep him at an arm’s length to keep from getting hurt. Kurt desires a partner, but isn’t willing to possibly hurt his sister for that to happen.

Through Kurt’s eyes it is easy to see how he could have been confused in Shane’s intentions when nothing is ever said. Lena and Shane just assume that Kurt will know what is going on but Kurt is a bit bullheaded and refuses to see what he doesn’t think is there. Kurt’s stubbornness hurts himself more than anyone else, but he owns up to his mistakes once he realizes the truth which helped him a bit in my eyes.

Cover art by LC Chase is nice and works well for this story.

Sibling team of mechanics run a shop recently frequented by a handsome car enthusiast with a troublesome car. Contracted to work on a decaying relic, the brother fights his feelings for the man he assumes is after his sister. Uncomplicated and short, but some decent smut at the end.
