This compendium has a little bit of something for all tastes.
Works that caused me to stop & stare and why:
[The Dead Christ Supported by Two Angels - Cosme Tura] Grotesque and ethereal, not an easy combination.
[The Death of Cleopatra - Guido Cagnacci] A master of the nude.
[View of the Custom House Landing at Venice - Canaletto] I wholeheartedly agree with the commentary in the book on this one.
[View of Vienna from the Belvedere - Bernardo Bellotto] Again, I am in full agreement with the insightful commentary.
[Triptych - Hans Memling] Remove the blight of the angel & change the Child to a babe in the center panel and what we have in this painting is a portal in time and/or fantasy of exceedingly excellent quality.
[Original Sin - Hugo Van Der Goes] This theological exhibit drew me in with its remarkable simplicity.
[The Procession to Calvary - Hieronymus Bosch] Exceptional.
[The Tower of Babel - Pieter Bruegel] This is an absolute masterpiece.
[Stormy Landscape - Peter Paul Rubens] Perfect use of deep and tempestuous coloring.
[Park of a Castle - Peter Paul Rubens] Here we are granted a wisp of vanity, hedonism & aristocracy.
[Bean-Feast - Jacob Jordaens] Emblematic debauchery captured in all its opulence.
[River Scene with Fishermen - Aert Van Der Neer] This painting is a wonderful representation of everything I love about Dutch landscape painting. Notably, that with a little imagination {or catalyst of some other variety ;) } you can be transported hundreds of years and miles.
[The Artist and His Studio - Jan Vermeer] The brilliance of this painting grows on me with each new viewing. Vermeer is a master at his craft.
