1. Sahitya Academy winning book
2. Every character has been justified
3. Professional's has had the pride and temper which can't eradicate from their behavior
4. Though the book written in 1968, but many scenes depicts the present generation
5. I enjoyed the character of Gopal - who know how to do the branding in his domain
6. Author gave an insight of Artist's situation much early. He's a prophet i would say
7. Completed this book in 3 hours without a break ; hypnotized by every situation and dialouge

Read the translated version of this book.

As it had won the prestigious Sahitya Academy Award, I thought that this book is good.

But, you cannot connect with any of the characters. You hate the arrogance of the lead character, you hate the submissive-ness of the female character.

Not sure why I picked this book.

Another novel with the usual beat-up plot and mediocre penmanship... does this really deserve the "Sahitya Akademi" award for that year? Hard to justify, sorry!!

Let me clear it out , I can't read Tamil so I read the hindi translation version.

Positives
It really talks about what is like to be a true artist who enjoy doing his/her art for the sake of passion and not as for a living. It's also talks about how she people like Gopal always tries to be in the front line and do everything for only wealth and popularity but on the other hand there are artists like Mutukumrana who put their self respect over anything.

Negatives.
The characters of Mutukumrana feels unlikeable sometime. The steps that he takes and the things that he says in the name of self respect sometime feels like from pure pride of his looks and wit.Overall I know that the time was not the same then but I find his character so easily offended on certain situations.
Another thing is the characters development of Madhabi .Madhabi was a independent actress in Gopals drama company before meeting Mutukumrana but she kinda fears Gopal for certain reason. Gradually she falls for Mutukumrana and at end of the book he refuses her to work as an actress because she isn't safe as an unmarried woman. And the talk about only married women safe in the society feels kinda problematic at end.(although I understand things were different back then) Although I like certain parts and aspect of the story I kinda get shocked that this book is the winner of Shaahityy Academy Award.
Over all if you like very idealistic and pure parspactive of movies and drama line and like really lengthy kinda writing style you may enjoy this book.
Happy reading .
