I write. Words are wonderful.

I've published two books for children about the beautiful place where I live: Good Morning, Door County (2016) and Good Night, Door County (2020.)

Drink In Sweet Rain is a collection of poems, published in 2020.

I recently switched genres to historical fiction. The Light is Ours, published in July 2023, allowed me to put characters in a place I love in a time period that fascinates me. The research was fun. And unlike poetry that is sparse, writing a novel meant I could add detail.

I'd love to hear from readers which books of mine they like best!

92: Good Morning, Door County by Ann Heyse and illustrated by Karen Heyse

This is really a delightful and very well-written children's book. It rhymes, as some of the best books do, and not in clunky or contrived ways. It includes a search and count--of Door County cherries, of course!--quest for kids, which is a fantastic feature. It truly includes so many of the must-do things in Door County. It makes a wonderful gift for kids--or adults, for that matter!--inviting them to go to Door County for the first time, or as a memento or souvenir of a trip there for reminiscing later, to share Door County with someone who has not actually visited there yet or who has and even if long ago, or even to provide an itinerary--a scavenger hunt, in a way--for a future Door County visit.

Good Morning, Door County is also absolutely beautifully illustrated by Karen Heyse. I've learned from reading with my grandchildren and also from tutoring young readers that in the very best books, the illustrations are so extremely important. Picture with me that these little minds are making sense of things, connecting words and ideas to the illustrations and very much needing them to all "match up" as their young minds develop and add all of this to their hard drives. With this book, not only does everything match, but each page is its own work of art and filled with details that can be used to create even more stories with kids than the words on each page.

Sooooooo many opportunities are presented in this book for readers of all ages. Good Morning, Door County really checks all of the boxes for me as reader, as teacher, as thinker, as grandma, as travel enthusiast, and as lover of Door County, Wisconsin: a very special place. It is a beautiful book for everyone who opens it!

If you're not local or close to a bookstore that carries it, please consider ordering it directly from Sand Beach Press, its publisher. You will not be disappointed.
