When Spike the Hedgehog finds a magic pot, a magic hammer, and a magic hat, he gives them to the members of his community who need them most. But when the greedy citizens see a pot that magically cooks for a poor widow, a hammer that magically outfits a new shop for the carpenter, and a hat that dispenses gold coins, they greedily decide to get something magical from the ocean for themselves.
This is a fantastic story for children and adults alike! Rosenberg does a great job setting up the scene and telling the story. The setting is a poor New England fishing village. Spike, a friendly hedgehog, loves fishing. He always seems to reel in the strangest things and ends up giving them to people in need. The first item that he pulls out is an old iron kettle. He gives it to Widow Rabbit. The next day, Spike reels in an old hammer. He stops by the woodshop of his friend Catwood on his way home to deliver the hammer to him. This encouraged the others to try their luck. Well, they pulled up old boots, rusty anchors, and other jetsam and flotsam. Nothing to write home about from those folks. Old Spike had all the luck. And when I say all the luck, I mean the guy was the luckiest. He reeled in an old hat that he figured his buddy Old Woodchuck could wear. What Spike didn't realize was the hat was filled with gold. But, the next day wasn't such a great day. The villagers, not realizing they had been greedy, urged Spike to go to sea to try for more miracles. A storm moved in. Soon, the gales were blowing and a fog blanketed the sea and the land. The villagers threw all of their gifts from their good friend back into the water, not knowing if Spike was alive or dead. The ferocious storm drove them to go home and await further news. The next morning came and the sun broke over the horizon like a bird hatching from an egg. Spike was back. But, he had more than just his spiffy slicker on. He brought a brand new fishing boat back with him. It had everything for all of the villagers to fish with him from that day on. The story ends with the tiny village prospering after catching fish hand over fist. Spike remained mysterious until his very last day on Earth, never telling how he survived the terrible storm.
