Rate this book
This is a collection of 6 recent stories by Zeng Xiaowen, one of the best immigrant writers from China. With two master's degrees, one in literature and another in information technology, Xiaowen wanders freely between the worlds of emotions and facts, creating her own style of literature. In her work, Xiaowen focuses on female immigrants in whose lives cultural conflicts play an important role, and on how individuals survive misunderstanding and prejudice. In Deportation, true love develops between a Chinese woman and a Texas immigration officer responsible for deporting her. In A Kafkaesque Engagement, a Chinese-Canadian couple planning to marry and a gay couple who want a divorce are both trapped in bewildering situations caused by bureaucracy; the Chinese woman, Yu Tong, a senior manager at a financial institution, has to deal not only with the absurd situation, but also the prejudice of the white lawyer they hired. The novella''A Double Flowered Woman'' tells the story of a Chinese woman who went through jail, divorce, loss of career, etc, only due to infertility. But she found support from a group of women from different cultures eventually started seeking new happiness. For Xiaowen's intelligent, well-educated and self-confident female characters, all experiences become part of their self-development.
