I was highly sceptical but I need to try having regular rests each day as part of managing my illness ME/CFS. Doing this on my own wasn't working so I looked to find something to help me rest, relax and meditate each day. This CD was the first thing I tried and I wasn't sure if I was going to get on with it or not. All the reviews talked about Glenn Harrold's strong London accent some saying this was offputting, some saying they got used to it and for others it didn't seem to factor other than to mention it.

Well He does have a strong accent but even more than that his voice at the beginning of the tracks is quite monotonous and kind of aggressive. More like he's voicing a reality TV show than a relaxation track. It made me giggle as this bloke talked about relaxing when I imagined him wagging his finger or shouting in a London soap opera. I thought it was never going to work.

Then a weird thing happened. 5 minutes into the first track I started to relax. 10 minutes into the track my body was in a deeply relaxed state. I wasn't hypnotised like unable to break the spell - I could easily have opened my eyes or shut off the track. But I didn't want to and I was really enjoying the sensation. Having tried to relax with soothing music lying down with headphones I know that this first track had a significant effect on my level of relaxation - both in relaxing my body and quietening my mind. As the track gets going Glenn's voice changes and softens. So in many ways his abrupt manner at the start is mirroring my busy mind and tensed body. I think it's all part of the way it works.

I'm a definate convert and find myself really looking forward to the next time I get to listen and relax again.

I do have one annoyance and that's the breathing technique he tells you to use in track 1 where you breath so your tummy inflates. I'm used to the pilates way of breathing which is from your diagphram and have been taught breathing from your chest or tummy isn't the way to do deep cleansing breathing. But I can substiture my own breathing technique at this point.

However the second track for me doesn't work. It using a guided visualisation technique but didn't give me enough scope to visualise my own stuff. He said I was going into a garden but once we were there he described it as being different to the one I had imagined. Again as we moved to a beach. My imagination meant that I found the guided visualisation too prescriptive and therefore it interupted the relaxation exercise.

But I think it's good that the two tracks have different approaches so whilst one suits me the other may suit other people better.

I'd encourage anyone trying it to not give up in the first 10 minutes but stick with it for the whole track.

Whilst only one of the two tracks is any good for me it works so well I'm still giving it 5 stars.

I have had the tape version of this recording for several years and listen to it regularly. It is wonderfully relaxing and I know the "circular breathing" technique so well I teach it to colleagues and friends when they're stressed. Then I tell them to go and buy a copy of Complete Relaxation by Glenn Harrold. One thing I've noticed is that you can never find any of Glenn's books or CDs on my favourite swap site, readitswapit.co.uk. Why? Because they work, so people don't want to part with them.
