This story is set in early 20th century Montana. Sheriff Frank Drinkwater is in love, and the object of his affection is joining him from Cincinnati. One Jack Galt, the town’s new blacksmith is suspected of having killed several, but there is no hard evidence to convict him. Now his intentions turn to Catherine Lang, the womanwho Drinkwater loves.
Svee brings up an interesting twist. His hero is dyslexic and thus illiterate. He befriends a youth, Mac McPherson, to be his reader and writer, and this strange alliance grows into love and friendship between the two. The bigger theme of this work is that of trust and loyalty. Also the upholding of the law despite it working against the upholder. I was disappointed at athe ending, for I can think of a half a dozen ways the story could have come to resolution. Still it is what it is. It was good in a sense that Svee was able to maintain tension throughout the book.
