Understanding Chemistry is a little book intended to provide an appreciation of chemistry to school students and all those interested in science. It brings about a synthesis of what is old and new in chemistry. It is intended for high school students and others interested in an appreciation of chemistry. Besides presenting simple facts and concepts, the book examines aspects of human interest such as the atmosphere, energy, environment, food, water and materials. The book is enlivened by coloured illustrations, life sketches of scientists, description of experiments and discussion of popular subjects such as tea, soap, firecrackers and rockets. C.N.R. Rao is Linus Pauling Research Professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research and honorary professor at the Indian Institute of Science. He was at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and has been a visiting professor at Purdue, Oxford, Cardiff and Cambridge Universities. He is now distinguished visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a member of many science academies including the Indian National Science Academy, The Royal Society, London, U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Russian Academy and Japan Academy. He was president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and the Third World Academy of Sciences. He has received several medals and prizes which include the Marlow Medal of the Faraday Society, Centenary Fellowship of the American Chemical Society, Hevrovsky medal of the Czechoslovak Academy, Einstein Gold medal of UNESCO, the Centenary Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry, London and the Hughes medal of the Royal Society. Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao, also known as C.N.R. Rao, is an Indian chemist who has worked mainly in solid-state and structural chemistry. He was awarded the Hughes Medal by the Royal Society in 2000, and he became the first recipient of the India Science Award, instituted by the Government of India, for his contributions to solid state chemistry and materials science, awarded in 2004.
I have nothing to ask about this book but will read. I would like to mention a quote by Prof CNR Rao as it said something in my mind as well,
Obviously, they (techies) suffer because they are like that. I don't think they enjoy their work. Look at me, I am so happy even at 80 (years)! I have no complaint, Happiness is something different. You must enjoy what you are doing," Rao quipped.
