I read this aloud to my pre-K and first grade daughters as part of a springtime study on birds. The book explores all the different things birds eat, many of which were surprising to my listeners. Roma Gans is probably my favorite author of early elementary science books.
Gans was one of my father's professors at Columbia; I grabbed this book of hers when it was getting weeded from my local branch library. It's a gem: simple, and inspiring for young people. It teaches them to observe and to test their observations. I also liked that the illustrations by Ed Emberley depict real birds, not made-up ones as I've seen in other children's books.
An early nature-study book for me. Memories are dim--I had the first edition. But it wasn't especially patronizing/dumbed-down, and for that I'm grateful. How grateful? I'm still feeding birds (rebelliously at times), and I will as long as I have money to buy seed and strength to set it out for them.
