Historical details of the Home Guard, in particular setting out: the initial tensions between a purely observational and an aggressive capacity - which ultimately changed into a role to defend key hubs; the change from an organisation which was volunteer based and in some cases openly non hierarchical to a more formal adjunct to the army (including conscription where needed) with a key role in enabling the regular army to be fully deployed overseas. The book also covers the much less well known resistance style army including a unit at Bury's Hall in Ashill. The book includes substantial sections of testimonials which bring the book to life.

Living in Norfolk, I found this to be a great read. It told the story of ordinary local people doing their bit.
