For a year, I would wake up at 4 am, read Focillon for a half hour while I age my cereal, write for a bit, then go to work at a factory where I made emergency room medications in pre-loaded, disposable syringes.
I don't know that I understood everything, but he did make an effort to encounter artistic objects as they were, without carrying a lot of baggage with him about historical analysis, etc. Pretty great thinker.
I'm sure it had a profound influence on my thought.
