Despite being one of the world's most reputable film directors, Michael Wolfgang has begun to question the meaning behind his work. In an attempt to end his streak of sell-out productions, Wolfgang takes on a high-risk script, going against the advice of his friends and colleagues. The script comes to life, telling the story of an orphaned boy from Ancient Greece, played by a former child star who has issues of his own to resolve. What begins as an artistic challenge quickly consumes the lives of those involved in the film. Wolfgang is determined to stay true to his vision, but at what cost to his cast, crew, or even his own sanity?
3 stories in 1. An ancient Greek tragedy to be re-enacted. The filming of the Greek tragedy. And the modern day lovestory happening in parallel with the Greek tragedy. At first a bit confusing when all main characters and extras are being introduced. Soon all falls in place when the leading characters come to the foreground and the link between those and the ancient Greek characters become clear. The difference is accentuated by the lettertype used. Short chapters of the modern day action and large type parts for the Greek play are stitched together with small interviews. This creates a book that makes for fast-paced reading, by its structure but also in the action. No action in the sense of an action-movie but in dialogue and what goes on on and off the scene between the characters. I hate Greek tragedies, great to see how the author actually made me enjoy reading one. The weight of the story is in the present, the actual making of the movie. Nice to see a positive image of filmmakers and filmmaking, in the middle of the #metoo era.
I was hooked from Chapter 1. I had no idea what to expect going into this novel, but I absolutely loved it! I really liked all of the characters, and how much I learned about the behind-the-scenes in the film industry.
Having written "Galen" I am of course biased. It's five stars for me more so because of what it represents to me. While I do feel as though I have grown as a writer since I began writing this novel, when it was written, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. So it gets 5 stars from me as a writer. As a reader, maybe 4 stars because I know that I can expect far more from this author, I just hope that she delivers!
