FORMER DEPUTY SHERIFF DARYL MAY writes with meticulous detail how two gunshots changed his life. On a muggy Florida night, he nearly left this world when fighting for his life in a watery ditch. This remarkable true tale is gripping and heart-thumping as you ride along with him on that dark and lonely road.
Chasing Shadows is also a mesmerizing bit of Florida history in its finest telling. Author Daryl May battled drug dealers, messed with the Mafia, told the FBI to shove it, monitored the Klan, witnessed racial discrimination, and found himself in the middle of 1960s civil unrest and riots. He guarded President Jack Kennedy four days before he was assassinated in Dallas. He wrote a hit song for a country music super star, performed on cruise ships, at an Australian mountain ski resort, and lounges and fashionable hotels from Florida to Myrtle Beach, SC. And according to news headlines, he had a one-nighter with Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the POTUS.
Chasing Shadows is a real life story with all the humor, suspense, and drama of a popular thriller. If Hiaasen or DeMille wrote a novel about May's life ... it might well read like Chasing Shadows.
I called in law enforcement .yself, so I found the authors words somewhat historic. I fondly remember my early days, and thank goodness never sound up in a life threatening shootout. While I have drawn my sidearm out several times, I was fortunate enough not to have dropped the hammer. I have hit a woman once, with my five cell flash light. That parked her butt I. The ground nice and quick! We were arresting her husband, and she wanted a piece of my ear.
This was a very entertaining book. Daryl and I worked together for many years and it was fun to hear many of these stories. I've also lived in the area all of my life so I was familiar with the territory. My sisted just loved him in his live act. (She was older than I and able to get into nightclubs during his entertainment years.) This is a good book by a good man.
A Kindle Unlimited read, CHASING SHADOWS is an interesting memoir of the long and interesting life of Daryl May. Split into three parts rather than written in chronological order of life events, May has written an entertaining narrative of his experiences from a Pinellas County, Florida deputy sheriff in his early years to the comedic musician he is today. For me, the chapters about his music and comedy events were more entertaining than his law enforcement days. I enjoyed reading and connecting with his lyrics and the links to YouTube.
I can recommend CHASING SHADOWS for all readers that like a light and easy to read memoir.
