George Hart comes up with certain surprising deductions about the influence of Tamil poetry and the Dravidian tradition on Sanskrit poetry. While I expected influence in terms of vocabulary, themes etc., he goes on to show that literary devices like suggestion come from the south. Reading this book, I also got a peek into Maharshtri and Telugu poetry. It is also a good way to learn about social, cultural and routine aspects of that period--even to know simple things like the cows being belled was nice. The narrative is a little academic though.
