Neil Marshall #2

Whisper of Rage

A KILLING HEAT IN HOUSTON

It is just what graduate student (and part-time chef) Neil Marshall doesn't need: to witness the near-fatal shooting of legendary Houston P.I. C. J. McDaniels. Especially since the gunmen think Neil can identify them.

Before long, Neil's quiet academic life is irreparably shattered as he's sucked into a tornado of violence that cuts across Houston *from a mansion in River Oaks to an all-too-silent suburban home, from a secret hospital room to the bed of a fascinating woman. In Houston's sultry summer heat a deep-rooted hatred is maturing, and a whisper of rage is building to a roar. . . .

I'm a marathoner, teacher, and have my master's degree in counseling, but it's my passion for the environment that sparked me to write The Wastelanders, a dystopian-clifi published in both e-book and paperback by Reputation Books. I'm represented by Kimberley Cameron of Kimberley Cameron & Associates Literary Agency.

Recently the Muse has kindly allowed me to tap into that creative magic and pen a young adult urban fantasy. If all goes well with the edits and revision, the final draft should be completed by early spring. (Hemingway liked running with the bulls. I enjoy running with the dragons.)

Finally, I've also published the Neil Marshall series of culinary mysteries set in Houston, Texas. These include If Wishes Were Horses, A Whisper of Rage (nominated for a Shamus Award), People in Glass Houses, A Catered Christmas (the one I most enjoyed writing), and Dead Man's Broth.

At 28, Neil Marshall's life is about to change and take him on an adventure he never asked for and is finding unbelievable, When Neil witnesses a shooting involving C.J. McDaniels, a private eye, nothing is the same. Meeting C.J.'s daughter Linda, may be the only good thing that happens as Neil finds himself in the middle of a mystery. This was a good read with a few twists and turns to keep the reader guessing and make the story intriguing. The author does a great job keeping the action and the story line believable and one readers will enjoy following.

After reading Tim Hemlin’s If Horses Were Wishes, I wanted to read more books in the Neil Marshall Mysteries series. A Whisper of Rage picked up shortly after where Book 1 left off, and started with a bang—the gunshot kind of bang! Once again, Neil was witness to a violent and deadly crime, and this time, he rescues the wounded man. Not just any man, a crude and impatient, chain smoking private investigator, and a reluctant alliance is formed. The plot thickens from there, as do the roles of the interesting new characters Neil meets while striving to solve the mystery. Through their unique and quirky traits, even the smallest characters are brought to life in a big way. Neil’s observations of them and the parts they play in this life threatening investigation, creates a daring mix of danger and humor that continues throughout the adventure. It was great hopping back into that beat old Bug and nice to see some of the old friends from Book 1. Once again, I look forward to reading another Neil Marshal Mystery.

The Whisper of Rage starts off with a bang, literally. It gets you hooked immediately then starts filling in with new characters and necessary background information. I liked the new characters and think it would be totally possible to have a whole series using the PI as the main character. Maybe there already is, I will have to look into this.
Tim Hemlin’s writing is smoother in this book. He also does well keeping the characters who continued on from the last book with their same personalities. However, Neil feels less broken in this book. In the last book he felt like he was almost being acted upon whereas this book it feels like he is making his own choices. It works really well to develop his character and show his growth as a person. I enjoy when a character can develop throughout a series and this is done very subtly.
There is mild language and a bit of sex behind the sceans but on a whole it is quite clean. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good Murder Mystery.

I received a copy from Loving The Book in exchange for my honest review
