Avuncular - as a reference to Mark Twain who was a dirty old man.
"thus life came and went and these were men and women who seemed to have been candles lighted and to be seen...until a sudden gust of wind had come and their lights no longer met the eyes; they had been, they no longer were" pg. 85. A. Lincoln in Illinois.
It’s amazing hearing so many anecdotes and details from a close friend and confidant. Not as salacious or controversial as it may have seemed during the time published, and it both magnifies and removes mystique as a student of history who can read between the lines and feel still closer to this greatest American and his true nature and personality.
Great historical read. The author, a friend and business partner, writes with no guile. If he saw it, he says, if he didn't, he says. Having spent years with the great leader, he is well qualified to write about Lincoln. He saw good and bad. Be prepared because this great book along with the following volume shows Lincoln as he was. Herndon does not write as a revisionist but pure fact. Refreshing!
Great look into the life of Lincoln before he became the great emancipator, written by his friend and law partner. An intimate look at Lincoln's personality and what influences he had in his life that helped him along the path to the presidency. It is a great read!
